How many of you...

have been busted by the deer you were drawing your bow to shoot? I'm wondering about this since this year will be my first time bow hunting. If you have, was it a mistake in timing on your part or just bad luck? It's the one part that has me concerned... being able to draw without being seen.

LOL.....NOPE. it was the BISCUIT!:D:D

Relax, WB-ettes......relax.

I've not been busted drawing, since.....but I'm REAL careful....and I've only been successful a handful of times.

I've never been busted coming to full draw. Are you going to be hunting from the ground or a treestand? More than likelyif get busted it's before you draw.

I'll be hunting from my climber.

I do alot of hunting on the ground and have been busted a few times. In fact the deer I shot last year busted me. I think he caught some slight movement but it didn't scare him to bad. He started trotting off and after I was at full draw and settled I made a slight noise and stopped him. Let the arrow fly and that was it.

I have had bucks bust me while letting down though. I draw and then they always seem to stop in the wrong spot and stay there for 5 minutes. I hold as long as I can and then have to let down. That really sucks.

Then most likely if the deer doesn't bust you from a distance you'll be OK when it comes time to draw. I always draw as soon as possibleso that the deers doesn't have time to walk around under my stand a see me. Good Luck.

Yes, that's another major concern of mine. I wish I had known when I started gearing up what I know now. I'd have gotten a 60# bow instead of a 70#. I don't have any trouble drawing it, even slowly, but I don't think I could hold at full draw for 5 minutes and still make a good shot.

twice, but i was young and inexperinced. but the second time i got busted the doe ran 5 yards and stoped. i put the smack on her and it was my first deer with a bow.

bigjim12,
You were young and inexperienced, and I guess this year I'mstarting out "old and inexperienced". Here's hoping things go as well for me.

I have before, back when i first started bow hunting but if you are careful, you shouldnt havea problem gettin away with it

You're going to get busted, everyone does.Just have to live and learn.I try to wait until the deer walks behind a tree or something thick and then draw, that seems to help out.

RE: How many of you...

Your setup is more critical than anything when it comes to getting busted on the draw. Don't worry too much about it. If you play the game correctly there is no need to draw REAL early and hold for long periods of time. If you can pull it off, keeping your bow somewhat in front of you and just drawing straight back actually produces very little movement to be picked up.

GMMAT 06-27-2007 10:31 AM

RE: How many of you...

That's good advice from Rybo, there.

Since I use a climber almost all the time......I also have my pick of trees, usually (because of where I live). I "try" to pick a tree with another tree VERY close....to shield me if that deer walks between me and that tree. It's as important if you're hunting out of a lock on. It's just additional "cover".

I had this happen, last year, too. I'm happy to say it was a buck I'm glad I didn't get an opportunity on, though (ultimately).

Never been busted by the deer I have drawn on but have been busted by old mature does that have seen me drawing on different deer. them old does sure are sneaky and smart.

It has been my experiance it is notthe movement, but some noise I made that has gotten me busted.

These days I setup my spots to aviod being busted.

RE: How many of you...

There is a fine line between being made and getting busted. Being made just means that the deer looks up...and knows something ain't right...and that my friend happens...espeically in the late season when the deer have been hunted and the leaves are gone.

I've been pretty lucky and have never gotten completely busted on the draw, which is pretty lucky with how much I hunt and how many animals I have taken. The few that have made me...it was ALWAYS past about mid-November...no leaves...pressure pouring on. In the early season...I've never been caught.

:D:D:DNow that's funny. I wonder what went through your mind when you realized you'd been busted?

The first thing that went through my mind was that I wish they would move closer. I've never peed on a deer before. That would be an excellent Kodak moment.

I can't even remember the number of times I've been busted. More than 1 less than 20. Bowhunted for 8 years before ever shooting a deer with it...if that tells you anything.

I almost choked on my lunch reading that.:D

I don't worry myself with that until the time comes. I usually worry about the deer getting into range first.

Its almost like you're invisible when in a treestand. Almost.

Not even once, yet. In...five...? years of bowhunting I have yet to be busted drawing on a deer.

It'll happen eventually, I'm sure.

Never busted by a deer but <--- that bear busted me, not that it did him any good. He must'a decided that skinny ol' me didn't look too aweful threatening, or he just scoffed when he read "Hoyt" on the limb pointed at him and went about his business. If it was a BowTech he'd have probably run off with his tail tucked!:D:D:D

Kodiak,
I don't think I could bowhunt those things. I'd be an absolute wreck with one of those in sight. Honestly, I'm kind of phobic about them. Brings back nightmares. You've got more nerve than I do.

I was last year - the only time - in a ground blind with one of the mesh windows open so I could see better at first light. I had to hold a draw for what seemed like an eternity and acutally brought the lower cam down on my knee to help relieve some of the pressure. The doe looked away, I brought the bow back up and released and watched the arrow skim under her belly withtuft of white fur. Misjudged the distance. [:-]Needless to say, I NEVER have the mesh open anymore. And hasn't been a problem since.

I've been spotted by a deer that i didnt know was around...I was drawing my bow on another deer and a deer i did not see spotted me and snorted and ran both of the deer out of the area.

RE: How many of you...

I bet almost all of us have been busted one time or another. I have. When it happened to me, i think the deer just heard my arrow draw back. His head was completely behind the tree so he couldnt see me, so he must have heard me. Since that happened, i had to hold my draw at "half-draw", which is REALLY hard. Didnt end up really getting a shot after that.

RE: How many of you...

I have been busted multplie times. However those times were all on the ground. I can not recolect ever being busted while I was in a stand.
