Nice buck...I'd say he'd go about 123...good inside spread. He does look somewhat older than his rack would suggest. I'd guess 3 1/2. Congrats. ;)

Not being smart here but curious.

How can you tell from a shoulder mount how old a deer is?

Wildlife Biologist did a tooth wear estimation on him. There are not many deer taken this big, body and age wise from the area that I hunt in MA

I figured it was by teethbut someone guessed 3.5from the photo. And I am serious, I am not sure how to age on the hoof.

I haveinfo from Dr Deer James Kroll about shoulders, rump, and swag of the gut and such butI would really like to know what to look at. Thread time.

That's a hog for sure, but you should have let me guess again. ;)

As far as judging deer, it just takes lots of practice...I've watched several deer judging videos over and over. This includes judging both rack size and age. It becomes very important (and potentially expensive) if you hunt in places that set minimums for one or both.

Wow! Great MA deer! That is a beast. I like the Benoits way of measuring a trophy (field dressed weight).

Great deer, is it a bow kill? What county?

RE: rate this deer

three major things I try to notice for a deer are

front shoulder area / if you can tell that the majority of the weight is upfront with large chest mass it is most likely a mature deer

body size / you just know when it is a big deer

antler mass / there are some 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 yr olds with nice racks but they haven't really developed any thickness to them yet

I try to look at these things while fighting off the buck fever. Years ago I would just panic and think the deer will turn and walk away before I can get off a shot. Last 3 years I passed a lot of smaller bucks for mature ones and it has paid off 2 of 3. There aren't many large deer in MA on a regular basis so it is hard to let them go. A lot of year round scouting and time in the tree stands, but it works

Bow kill and in Worcester County. I only hunt with a bow more challenging that way. PAssed on 4 wall hangers in one weekto get to that one alot of second guessing myself last year, but I got lucky again
