QDMA or Antler farming?

If its not about the horns....then why does someone shoot a buck just because it has them?
Never have gotten a good answer to this question.
Never have gotten a good answer to this question.
The folks I'm referrring to shoot bucks because they have a buck tag. Traditionally you could get a buck only or either sex tag in NE. They shot the first deer that walked by with an either sex tag, or the first buck that walked by with a buck only tag. They didn't discriminate about horns with an either sex tag because they were deer hunting, period.
Now you can get 2 doe tags, and a buck only tag. They get all3 so they can shoot 3 deer. They take 2 does and a buck. If it happens to be a 160 class whitetail, as one of the people I'm talking about shot last year so be it. If it happens to be a spike, which the same guy shot the year befor so be it. They like to shoot and eat deer.
FYI, the 160 inch horns are nailed on the wall in the garage right amongst the spikes, forkhorns, basket racks and several in the 125-140 class deer. The only people that ever see them are those that go in the garage. Some people really don't care.

So you can only brag about getting a big deer? That makes it ok. I wouldn't necessarily include everyone in that either.

I am sorry but guys who brags and says "I shot an 8 point"I always ask "How big is the rack" They say well just a basket
The tend to try and make folks think they shot an older deer, I really do not understand why. If that is what they want to shoot than be proud.
Ever notice these days people shoot a 1.5 buck they follow it up with "Well I am a meat hunter" why? If that is what they want to shoot be proud
Why do they seem to need to justify what they kill?

Throw them in the trash or give them to fido to chew on

I've said this before.......QDM in it's true form is a good thing, but when people start to pass up younger bucks or kill bucks with antlers that they deem "inferior" just to "cull" them, or not killany buck that can be taken without a negetive impact on the herd, just because they feel the buck is too small, I feel they have crossed over to TDM.
For the record, if that's what you like to do it's fine by me....but don't justify it by saying your practicing QDM because your not, you just trying to grow bigger antlered deer at that point.
Edit: I must edit this to say that waiting for a slammer to show up and passing on smaller bucks in the mean time is fine. I myself have done this before many times, but that's not QDM either....it's just "selective hunting".

For him to enjoy I guess. I agree with justifying what you kill. No need to do that, if that is the case you shouldn't have shot it in the first place.
Ask him what he shot last year and he would say, "Oh, I got a nice one."
That would be about it.

He hangs(IMO) them because he is proud of all of them and he should be
I have 8 mounts and rest of my deer are nailed to back of a shed at the farm. When I look at either of them I still remember that hunt. When people see the mounts in my house or the ones nailed to the shed they always ask "How did you get that one?" I am more than happy to tell a story or two

I honestly think that Resonse is due to so many hunters now looking down there noses at those who kill young bucks. TV and hunting shows do a pretty good job of making "killing a young buck" look like a bad thing so it's only natural for a guy to immediately make excuses when he is otherwise proud of what he killed.
