He buys his license, procurs a place to hunt goes out and has a good time and shoots a forkhorn,
How many folks over the age of 15 seriously call a forkhorn a "good time"??? [&:]

Are there really adults like that out there? Do you know adult hunters thatnever raise the bar and set goals? How boring would that be every season! Is it just about the machoism of bragging to everyone that YOU/they killed something, anything, every year?

The funny thing is states tell us we can or can not shoot with does and nobody says a word. Do the same thing for bucks and people go nuts, LOL

Jim say

Not about the horns

mez I think he can appreaciate how hard it is to get a group of hunters to commit to deer management of that level. Hell here in MI we have wars over basket dink 8 points[:-]

Would I be part of that group? No I would not.
ROCK ON! Want meat? Shoot Doe.

The meat hunter, the non trophy hunter that shoots what he sees does not benefit from that.

Why should he pass on that deer for your benefit 4 years from now?

If he were a true meat hunter he would only be hunting mature deer. After all, mature deer are bigger and have more meat on them. [:-]

Great point Dan!

Why take a 150 lber when you could take a 300 lber? If they suggest there is a huge difference in taste then I would also suggest a cook book!

I've been fortunate enough to tag some respectable whitetails that were very "healthy" in both body and antler size and you know what.... they tasted GREAT!

Kudos to _Dan and Il-Cornfed. Here are two questions I have along with comments:

(1) What does QDMA say about shooting mature does? If immature bucks are passed on, should we pass on immature does as well?

In the areas I hunt it seems most bowhunters do take does, and though some younger bucks are taken, most do seem to hold out for a mature buck. But I witness the brown its down practice moreso in firearms season, as it seems many if not most firearm hunters are happy to take the first thing coming by.

Just like most hunters 99 % of golfers are more than content to just play the game, there are guys that hunt one or two days a year and yes that fork horn is just as good as it gets to them.

Seeing the forest for the trees seems hard for some here. I would guess that the guys posting here represent a very small percentage of all hunters in the country that actually consider hunting a life style.

Certainly education would help many understand the goalsof Q.D.M.But many more just do not care, they have jobs ,family's & many more of todays problems on their plate. They consider a weekend of deer hunting as nothing more than a break from life's little difficulties.

Just keep in mind its not all about the horns.................

Agree with bawanajim,

The goal for some people is simply to get out of the house, leave their work behind, hang out with their buddies for a few weekands, kill a deer, and pass a good time.

You have tons of people like this in every sport or hobby.

That is fine, but we better stop calling ourselves conservationalist as a group. Because we now know Traditional Deer Managemnet is not good for the health of the herd or the eco system.

So when the same 99% who like to play the "We are conservationalist card" when protecting hunting should not anymore. Should just say we like to go out and hunt and shoot some deer.

Coug mag I try and shoot 1.5 does because I am a meat hunter To me that is the best meat. I shoot bucks for the wall and does for meat just what I do. You make a great point, I will look into it.
