I don't think that it matters whether or not this was a wild deer. At least not for the purpose of learning what different aged deer look like. I am just amazed at the difference from 2.5 to 4.5. Amazing transition. The mass difference and spread difference are phenominal.

ORIGINAL: FOP23

I'm not buying it, this camera man/author expects you to believe that he is the only person along with the property ownersthat have seen that buck in 8 years and he manages to photograph it twice in the same spot in different years (i.e. 2.5 and 4.5)? I appreciate the article and the photos, but I believe this to be someone's breeder buck. If that's a free-ranging deer this author manages to find year after year I'll put my bow down and pick up a pencil.

Unlike Charles Alzheimer, Bill Kinney photographed his deer in the wild. Like I said earlier, these pics were probably taken in WI.

Plus, thereare a lot of large properties that people have no access to hunt. These properties hold some huge deer that die of old age.

I am surprised this deer kept getting better with age. I have killed a few old deer in WV that at around 7 they had grey on thier nose, big round bases, but only a 5 point.

Thanks for the great pics of a beautiful buck. But since it started as a good 1.5 with obvious potential , it doesn't tell us anything about what the average spike will look like at 2.5 yrs. Prior to ARs 18% of our 2.5+ buck weren't AR legal with the 3 pt. rule and with ARs that percentage would obviously be higher.

Wow, you dug deep for this thread!

Still a great buck though.

It's amazing (and it was noted by one of the replies on F&S) how his body and posture really didn't deteriorate over time (especially at 5.5 +). At 8.5, he's still holding strong. Very little if any sagging stomach, no real droop in the back, not real grayed face, either. Great photos. Glad you dug this back up, because I missed it the first time around.

Look at the deer at 1.5 years old.

His body is HUGE for a 1.5 year old. If you look at his chest, back, and belly, you'd swear he was alot older. His head and neck look like a young deer, but the rest of him looks 3.5 or older.

But if you look at his rack at 1.5, he's just a little 6 point.

I wonder how many guys would shoot this deer as a "management buck" at 1.5 , thinking he was an olderbuck with a really small rack?

I've seen those pics before in a recent magazine article, I forget which one though. It is interesting to see how they develop over years. I think I recall him being a fenced deer, not that it makes a diff. Very cool.;)

if i was that photographer, and had that deer patterned well enough to get a picture of him every year, the eighth year i'd have brought a rifle along fora second shot :D
