Second Shots at Deer / Whisper Quiet Bows
 

How many people have gotten a second shot at a deer due to their bow being so quiet (not being heard by the deer)?
I'm not talking about the deer running 10 yards at the shot and then stopping to figure out what made the noise and you getting a second shot.

I guess I'm curious because guys say their bows are "whisper quiet." I have also read stories of guys who
shot and the deer just kept moseying around the stand while they got a second shot.
My bow is not that loud, but I still can't imagine a deer will not hear almost any bow being shot within 30 yards.

I've gotten second shots only 3 times. Once at a hog, and two at young deer. They were all with the same bow. It was a Mathews MQ32. Very quiet bow, but it doesn't say much for my shooting with that bow.[:@]

The 2nd biggest buck I have ever killed was on the second shot, It was a 10 pt weighing 235lbs, the first shot was at 10yds and missed big time(BUCKFEVER) the 2nd shot was at about 20yds. Maybe he was def who knows, the bow was loud and fast it was a High Country Excaliber. Maybe just lucky too, I hear that a lot..

You're not kidding loud. I had one of those back in the day and it sounded like smacking a belt of a table when you shot it. I think you may have scared that buck stiff with the noise.;)

Well sometimes it's just conditions that allow it. My first ever deer hunt ( just tagging along too young to hunt). My Dad shot at a Doe 3 times with a .50 cal Flintlock muzzleloader. She was down in a valley maybe 80-100 yards. She was with another doe,feeding they never moved..looked oranything. You know it takes a while to load a ML and it was his first time hunting with one. I can tell ya the report was anything but quite. There was about 2 feet of snow. He dropped her in her tracks on the last (3rd)shot!

If ya'll remember my 04 contest buck, 3rd shot at 41 yards double lunged him...:D Called him after the first miss, (16 yards) called him in again after the second miss (25 yards).[&:]

That sounds like a good piece of hunting there. I don't know how you wouldn't get busted in that scenario (were you 30' high?)

When people do claim the deer didn't react to the shot, do you think the deer hear the bow, but for whatever reason just don't react. I just don't believe the claims that the deer doesn't hear it. Maybe it ignores it or thinks its tree/natural noise.

If a human can hear it, a deer definitely can.

Unfortunately, this is one area I have a little experience with :eek: I have shot and had deer go about their business as if they heard nothing, and I have taken shots where they reacted to the sound of the arrow hitting brush, etc but not react to the source (i.e. me shooting.) Typically, they look to see what the noise is, and they don't see anything out of the ordinary and just keep going about their business.

Iwould "think".....that the sound of the arrow hitting something gets their attention a LOT more than the sound the bow makes.

Am I crazy?
