Head shots?
How many of you have ever taken a head shot at a deer? Please expand as to whether it was taken with a bow, rifle, shot-gun, black powder and etc...
Thanks... |

RE: Head shots?
Personally, I never had, however, I did recommend that my friend take a head shot.
We were trailing his liver/stomach hit buck after waiting6 hours. We tracked him about 200 yards. We were on our hands and knees trailing just specks of blood. We came upon the buck which was bedded (we were not sure if he could get up or not). He was only about 5-7 yards and his butt was directly facing us, his head turned sideway (he had his head up). My friend had a passthrough through the skull which put him down right away. |

RE: Head shots?
Have shot several with rifle and shotgun (buckshot). With buckshot at close range (<30yards) its the shot of choice on a doe for me. Most of my deer culling involves .204s and headshots as well. For hunting purposes, I like the high shoulder/base of neck shot through the front of the scapula that takes the spine right where it dips before going into the neck. Never ever lost one with that shot.

i shot a buck with a shotgun slug right below the ear and a doe in the back of the neck.

RE: Head shots?
I hoping to try that on a pig this year ( head shot ) :D... It's just so hard to a hog to sit still long enough to put one through the ear.. just would like to see if it drops immediately.

RE: Head shots?
I have never taken a head shot. Iknow that they are deadly and will drop the deer instantly but there is just too much room for error with a head shot. This with a firearm of course. I also think that if you are that close where you feel confident enough to try a head shot, a shotthrough the shoulders would be a better choice.
When I gun hunt I like to take out at least one shoulder as it keeps the deer from running too far...... if they don't drop in their tracks. With a bow I would never even consider it at all, I'm strictly aiming for the heart and lungs only. |

There is a name for that shot, I'm sure someone here will remember it. I think it is called a texas something or other?
Help me out here folks... |
RE: Head shots?
A few years ago(OK, more than a few), while I was home on leave, a friend invited me out to his lease. I had never hunted before, but the military did a fine job teaching me to shoot. A buck walked up close to the feeder, but stopped short with his body behind a tree and his head sticking out. It was a 75 yard shot, so I took it and dropped him. My friend was upset with me for taking the shot and I now know that I could have waited a minute and the deer probably would have given me a good broadside shot.

RE: Head shots?
I've taken 1 head shot in my life. Rifle shot. I had just came out of back surgery and was wearing a full turtle shell. That meant NO bowhunting or shooting a large caliber rifle.. All I could hunt with was my 223 and I had to have my brother's help to pack out the critter. I needed meatfor the freezer. I shot a cow elk standing still, right in the temple at 50 yards. Dropped her stone dead in her tracks.I doubtI will ever need to take another head shot again.

TEXAS HEART SHOT!:D
|
RE: Head shots?
Please don't shoot deer in the head, especially with a bow....why not just wait for an opportunity at the lungs/heart? The one time you miss by 2 inches and take a deer's jaw off....well......if you have any respect for the animal we hunt, think about it.
|
RE: Head shots?
Now there is an idea! Head shots, with a bow...
I'm going to look into this! |
RE: Head shots?
I've heard that jaw thing before.A calm deer that reacts to a shot ducks. You are aiming for the ear when you shoot at head. This is 2 inches above jaw. You'll miss high. If you miss low you have no business shooting that shot. I don't promote head shots; lungs are too easy to hit. But....... I have shot 2 does in head. 1 bow, 1 12 gauge. Neither knew what hit them.

RE: Head shots?
I corrected my original picture post Primate. If you have any better suggestions feel free to post. ? Expected.
p.s Luck is when knowledge and preparation come together. And you have on "good" camo. |
RE: Head shots?
hey mark, no buddies to take your pic? i only see your bow and hog there.. nice trees in the back ground too- looks like central oklahoma to me. :D
asat works, looks funny when not in the woods, but in the woods-- dissapears. i dont have any yet, but will after seeing yours. |
RE: Head shots?
That's what I figured MarkJ.. I hate to chase pigs through swamps and briars, and if I don't place the arrow exact, it's still a pig. :D:D

RE: Head shots?
I'm new to hunting, sorry. I didn't mean anything by it. As far as suggestions go I'm speachless, I just know I wouldn't wear that in the privacy of my own home!
Ha! |

RE: Head shots?
I thought the idea of people taking head shots was a joke until this year. I traded videos with production company at the Illinois Deer Classic, under the name "world hunting group". The name of the video is Relentless Pursuit 2. After watching the first 20 minutes of the video I thought I had just about seen the most disgusting hunting ethics (or lack there of) I'd ever seen. That was before they started showing head shot attempts on does with bows. I actually wrote the company I was so disgusted! Clearly a production company relying on "shock and awe" to stand out. On the back of they're DVD it actually says "See what couldn't be shown on TV"...... I would never talk "crap" about any of our competition, but as far as I'm concerned, these guys have no business in this industry.
