Default Archery and Outdoors in our School

Here are a few photos from our Outdoor Education unit and our Archery unit in PE this past week.

We built mini lean-to survival shelters for wilderness survival skills and are doing backpacking/camping skills this week in Health.

P.E. we are finishing up archery this week, over 350 students took part this school year.

That's great to see. More and more schools are taking archery out of PE, so it's good to see some still allow it.

That would have been nice to have that when I was in High School. I would of had to be badminton and Archery champion.

I wonder how safe it is?

There used to be javelin in schools not to long ago.

It all depends on the teacher and the students. I had my first go at teaching archery during my internship 2 months back and it went very well. There was zero tolerance for horse play and i made that very clear to the kids. Prior to shooting i spent a class going over all the parts of the bow as well as safety concerns followed up by an exam. If you didn't get 100% on the exam you never got to shoot. I never had any problems with any of the kids who in other activities tended to be a handful. I think the main thing is to get across the danger of this activity and importance in following directions to the students. Yes some school divisions have banned the activity but i believe if the teacher knows what they are doin, no problems.
