How tall is a mature buck?(Answer on pg. 2)
 

I have this mount in my basement. This buck weighed 206 pounds field dressed. He was run down after the rut, I got him Jan 2, so in Oct he probably weighed 230 -240 pounds. I am amazed at how many people, some hunters too, say to me that this deer has a small body. I think a lot of people believe deer are as tall as horses or cattle. Maybe it is because they usually see the head hanging on the wall at eye level.

My question to you is how tall do you think this deer is at his shoulders, in inches. I am interested to see what some "experienced hunters" will say.

That buck is a big massiveanimal, no doubt. What your not seeing is the heavy gut that hangs down on a mature buck. If that heavy gut was showing, believe me, a few reactions would be different.

I think another aspect of it is that not many of us get to see a big buck eye to eye. It's always up from 15-25 ft. up in a tree. The animals look alot bigger up in a tree than if we were to stand eye to eye.

I got that impression at Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas where all of those huge monsters are full body mounted and looking at you at eye level. Theirhead gear was huge but the bodies looked small.

By the way, beautiful mount...........39 inches exactly.

I'd say he's about 40 inches to his shoulders? Nice buck by the way.

Im guessing 45" at the top of the shoulders. Thats a beautiful buck you have there, hansom rack. I would love to here the story by the way. was you hunting HIM or know he was in the area. congrats on a fine buck and great mount.

43 to the top of the shoulders. I got way to close to a illinois 7 point one time ( coulda touched him with my arrow on the ground) and hewas about 37 as a 1 year old. ( The coolest experience i have EVER had in the woods)

ok guessinto the bottom of that receptacle on the wall it is about 12 inches(average measurement for receptacle id say) then i would guess about 48 inches to the top of the shoulders
