Varmet Hunting
Who here varmet hunts with a bow and not a gun and if so what do you use for the arrow tip?
I hunt raccoons and squirrels with a bow and 100 grain broad heads...Thanks appreciate your responses! |
RE: Varmet Hunting
If I were going to be shooting racoons.....I'd go with a fixed blade broadhead.
I can't see shooting a $13 arrow with a $10 broadhead at a squirrel.....so ya got me, there. |
RE: Varmet Hunting
yeah i use a fixed blade as well. The last raccoon I shot i skinned, and now i am trying to taxidermy it myself. I taxied a squirrel and turned out nice so we'll have to see how this one goes!

RE: Varmet Hunting
Have you looked into Judo tips? They will work on small game and they aren't expensive like a broadhead.

RE: Varmet Hunting
I have heard of them but i really dont understand how they work? are they dependable and where would your shot placement be?

RE: Varmet Hunting
Here a couple heads from Cabela's. The judo come in 100g, 125 and 135g.
They are also great for stump shooting, try them out that way to see how they fly. ![]() Judo Points The Judo Points are a favorite among small-game hunters. These judo points feature small spring arms that snag on grass, brush or the ground on impact to flip your arrow up vertically to reduce loss. Also available in 135-grain with a 5° taper for wooden arrows. Below is a G5 small game head, they come in 100g and 125. Hope this helps. ![]() G5 Small Game Head Dispatches down-sized critters with a mega dose of shock-and-tear trauma. Expect instant immobilization, rapid fatality and field-point flight. It thumps and grabs with authority thanks to three talon like prongs with sharpened inner surfaces and a rounded nose. Prongs flip the arrow upward at ground impact for easy recovery. |
RE: Varmet Hunting
have you ever used one before? Where do you aim. I pull 68 pounds will that be too much for judo points snapping? I really would not like to adjust the poundage...just a hastle

RE: Varmint Hunting
With small game like bunnies and squirrels you want a blunt or judo tip, not a broad head. They don't kill them like a deer or bigger pest. They kill by shock. It transfers the energy into the animaland pretty much stuns them to death, and I'm sure breaks some bones at the same time. Possibly snapping the neck.
I have shot bunnies and squirrels with both broad heads (mechanicals) and blunt tips. The blunts work much better. It anchors them right on the spot usually. They don't run and bleed, they just flip over and die. Doesn't really matter where you hit them either, just aim for the middle of the body or front shoulder. Now with a raccoon or woodchuck I don't know if I would use a blunt tip or not. Those are pretty decent sized and tough critters. You may just piss one off doing that unless you had a heavy arrow and a bow with mucho KE. I wouldn't want to do it with mine I know that. I think large cut mechanicals would work good for those critters. Or better yet cheap good flying fixed heads. Take my word for it, shooting at woodchucks with a bow will result in some ruined arrows;). Paul |

Bone and tissue gets stuck in the judo's ,,, I didn't like them at all . For me - If it's on the ground , G5 SGH (best small game head out there , I've tried them all ) , If it's in a tree or around rocks - blunt tip . I 've shot a dozen or so rabbits with broadheads and have had great results with those too ,, but I think shot placment is a little more critical for a fast kill , and it's probably overkill for somthing like that . But I wouldn't trust a small game head for a critter as large or mean as a coon . Thants my 2 cents .
