RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
I was 25 feet in a tree, the buck was an eight point he was 6 yards from my tree. All I got was bark!
|
RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
i know i haven't hunted nearly as long as most on here but last year i missed on a 150 class buck @ 22 yards. shot wayy under him. Last year i missed a doe @ 20 yards. just over her back. oh well thats why they call it hunting not killing.
|
RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
20 yards. I had a large doe perfectly broadside. Release the arrow and see it hit a small vine and veer right over her back. That is what I get for not clearing my shooting lane before the season.

ORIGINAL: JoeRE Mine was at about 6 yards...strait down. I hit the edge of my treestand.:( About 140" 8 point.... |
RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
Four yards from the base of tree. I drew back, bent over, turned for the shot. Virtually straight down.Limb of my bow hit my seat post on release. Shot under the deer. It was LOUD!
Oh, I have more if you want. But that was the closest. After 22 years of bow hunting I have plenty, believe me. Missing is part of it. |
RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
Probably about 5 yards or so for me too.
I struggle with those close, severe angle shots from a treestand[:o] |
RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
12 yards on a big fat thanksgiving hen....bummer..
|
RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
6 yards from base of tree, i have chocked on two p&y class deer. Both were similar instances. They were on a mission, i drew, rushed it and forgot to try and stop both of them. Belly hair on both[:o]

RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
The close ones I don't have a problem with it's the quick shots at longer distances that give me trouble. My closest miss was at 40 yards on about a 180" non typical mule deer in velvet. Shot about an inch over his back.
He poped up over a little knole about 7 yards away, spooked and stoped broadside at 40 yards and gave me about 2 or 3 seconds to make a shot andI picked the wrong pin. Dead center left and right butright over his back.[:@]Live and learn. [&:] |
RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
I hate to admit this. I missed a doe and a buck at 12 yards.
I first missed the doe and shot over her back. I forgot to bend at the waist and shot her for 18 yards. She never heard the arrow and just walked off. A 6 point was following her and stood in the exact same spot a minute later. Being the egotist I am at times, and thinking it could not have been me that caused the earlier miss. I made the exact same shot at the young buck. Right over his back. |
RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
Big Doe about 12 yards!!!!!!
|
RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
Prolly about 6 yards. Shot over her back. She was so close that I made the mistake of not looking through the peep and at the pin. It had to be a quick shot because she saw me move. Oh well lesson learned for next time.

RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
My first shot ever with a bow at a deer was real nice buck not 3 yds from my tree. Came right down beside(under) him.
|
RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
I was hunting in a pit blind I had dug in the middle of a switchgrass field. Pretty much the only thing above the ground was my waist up. I had a doe come in about about 3 yards and I blew it, shot right over her back. Thats pretty bad when they are about in grabbing distance and you still miss. Oh well it was deffinetly memorable.

RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
8 yards on a doe. First arrow I ever released at a deer. Shot about 3 feet over her back.

Here's my story;
Many years ago, it was the first day of the West Virginia archery season. I was hunting with two buddies. Right after first light I saw a button buck approaching from behind me. I was in a treestand on a hillside. The button buck was on a trail on the downhill side of my tree. In West Virginiawe shot any deer and did not hunt antlers. Weeach had two tags for either sex.We shot whatever came by first. The button buck stopped underneath me. I shot practically straight down. I heard that hollow"Thunk"at my arrow's release. I hung up my bow to give the deer a little time. I sat in my tree thinking of how quickly I had filled my first tag and wondered how my buddieswere doing. We were there for three days and hoped to bring home six deer. I waited about 15 minutes and climbed down. My arrow was sticking out of the ground. Imagine my surprise whenI examined my arrow and it was completely clean on blood or hair. I followed the deers tracks in the loose damp soil for about35 yards. No blood! Icouldn't believe I had missed. I knew I heard that familiar "thunk". I couldn't have missed. I went back to retrieve my arrow. I couldn't pull it out of the ground. It was stuck it a tree root beneath the ground. that explained that "thunk" I heard. I managed to get the arrow out and returned up in my stand. I barely got settled in when a fog started rolling up the hill from the valley below. As it filtered through the trees it was almost like a dream or movie or something. Suddenly I saw a deer coming up the hill through the fog toward me. It was a small buck. I drew my bow and made the shot. This time I saw the arrow strike home. Later that morning I found that one of my buddies connected on a doe. We ended up with 5 deer between the 3 of us in the next few days. |

My first season bow hunting (3 years ago) I had twodoescome upon my set up. It was windy and I was in a climber about 20 feet up. I watched as they bedded down about 10 yards away. As the time was closing on my morning hunt (other plans) I grunted, thenwhistled and then they both stood up. I drew back on the doe close to me and shot right under . She turned and looked at my arrow stuck in the root of a tree. As she turned her head from side to side in curiosity I missed again, high. I turned to the other doe and proceeded to miss 2 more times at close range. With an empty quiver the 2 unsuspecting deer meandered off. As my heart rate returned to normal I realized I had alot to learn about archery hunting. I'm glad that they were all clean misses. I have come a long way since that day. This past year I harvested 4 deer with the same bow cleanly and no misses.

I watched a guy miss a bull elk COMPLETELY at 3 yards. I think the up close and personal bugle got to him a little....

Missed a giant buck at 24 yards. I shot right over his back. He snuck up on me and I rushed it.

RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
Shot a foot over a coyote at 10 yards a couple years ago. I had to twist and shoot in a weird position and ended up just floating my pin.

RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
Two seasons ago on the largest buck I have ever seen in the wild.....I am about 15 ft up in a tree on top of a very steep, high bank overlooking a small stream. Deer came to other side of the creek at a very steep downward angle putting him about 30 yds away from me (on the slant) but only about 10 yards out fromthe vertical plane of the tree. Trying to remember all the geometry involved in shooting at such an angle I shaved a double handfull of hair from his left side/chest when I held way too low on him. I am 58 yrs old and that is the first time I ever actually cried over missing a shot!

RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
My closest miss? Hmm about5 yards, shot right over the top of him....not something im proud of, my longest miss.18 yards.

RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)

|
RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
10 yards at a doe during my first season bowhunting. Actually missed her twice [&:]

RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
I think that what made it something to see was that the arrow was perfectly placed and stuck in the ground as such. And I swear that critter didn't move till after the release. It was one of those things that make you stand there with nothing to say for a few seconds....then comes... "what just happened".
|
RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
My closest miss would have to be about 2 1/2 yds. On a doe that I was expecting to come into view a bit further away.
|
RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
No joke..8 yards, from the ground, completely broadside about 7 seasons ago on a doe...!!!![&:]
I couldn't believe it either!![&:] Looked at the wrong pin.. way wrong pin..!![&:] |
RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
34 yards for me, it was the first deer I'd ever shot at. I was on the ground and misjudged the yardage, the arrow fell right under her heart... and my head fell to my hands.:(
|
RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
well i missed i carp at like 1.5 yards the other day but as far as deer, the first year out i missed a doe at 8 yards.
|
RE: What is your closest miss? (be honest:)
WHEN I FIRST STARTED HUNTING, THERE WERE TO MANY CLOSE CALLS TO ACTUALLY SAY. I ONCE MISSED A BUCK I GRUNTED IN. HE ACTUALLY BRUSHED BY ME ON THE GROUND. HE PASSED. I GRUNT STOPPED HIM AT 10 YDS. SHOT 3 FEET OVER HIS BACK. THEN THERE WAS THE TIME I MISSED A 130" 8 PT AT 8 FEET OVER A SCRAPE. OKAY, I WAS REAL BAD. ONLY CONSULATION, I GOT BETTER.
