stopping arrows

ok i just put a new whisker biscuit on my bow and i was shootin at the target tryin to sight it in(missing a lot) and it went back behind and hit my neiighbors car. is there any way, without moving my target, i can stop the arrows. (and i know if i hit the target that would stop it so...)oh and the deer target i use has a huge hole where the vitals go so idk

RE: stopping arrows

Wow, sounds like an interesting set-up you have there. As far as a backstop, I would recommend a large pile of hay bales to surround your target. There is this stuff you can buy to fill up the hole in your target as well. Sounds like you may need to find a new shooting spot though if you are going into someone elses yard. You are lucky there was no one over there.

RE: stopping arrows

Yeah, i would definately reccomend finding a safe place to shoot. What if your neighbor had been walking out to their car or something, that is crazy. Start at 10 yards, its almost impossible to miss a desecent sized target there, aand work your way back.

I was kind of hoping this post was a joke...

That's some funny stuff! :D:D:DYou really should be more careful where you put your target though.;)

My bow shop owner rotates his spot target "blocks" about every six months. They're AT LEAST a 4x4....and they're not in bad shape. He sells the used ones for $65.

If I didn't have a SAFE place to shoot at my house....I'd shoot elsewhere.

Your area is NOT safe (as described)....even if you HAD that large a backstop. "I" think you need to address where you're shooting.

Sounds like your neighbor's cat is already doing a fine job of stopping your arrows? Not sure what the problem is?

LMAO

Maybe get yourself a few big chunks of miner's belt, and built a large wooden frame, hanging the belt inside the housing. Miner's belt will stop your arrows without a problem. Getting them out... that's another story.

What a cat you hit a cat and no one got mad lol. I dont like cats but I wont shoot someones pet, that is too funny if you did.

In hunters class they say that you have to be aware of the target and whats behind or did you skip that class?

I saw this earlier and didn't want to reply until some else did. I thought you'd take much more of a beating than you are getting. Hey, usehay bales/ banded up bale of cardboard or even a 4X8 sheet of 3/4 plywood but please get something and soon.

Oh man, I misread that - I thought you hit a "CAT" not a "CAR"- either way, it's pretty funny anyway. Good stuff.

"Honey, there's an arrow stuck in the tire."

I've fixed old 3d targets with expanding foam. It works really well. Just spray it in the hole and let it dry. Once dry you can use a utility knife to shape it. You can even spray paint it to get it to match the other foam if you want.

You also get a back stop like the others have said. It's just safer. Hay bales are cheap and will save your arrows from getting damaged by your neighbor's car.;)

i suggest moving somewhere else to practice. sounds too dangerous, oh and i'd save up for a new target too.

RE: stopping arrows

Why don't you want to move your target? I live in a neighborhood too but for God sakes man have a little common sense..... I digress.

If your arrowhit the car and it didn't do any damage then its obviously not going very fast.

You could probably stop those things with an old wool blanket or a couple of bedsheets strung up clothesline style. A tarp perhaps....

If you are only trying to stop pass throughs then it would help. But one way or another, at least shoot in a safe direction. No matter what sort of "backstop" you have, an arrow will sooner or later find its way through.

An arrow of mine found its wayunder my block target, through theholes in the chainlink fence, through the woodpile (amazing) and into the slide of my neighborsgrandson's swing set. Of course, no one was in the yard, but it made me remember that the safest shot is the one that is ALWAYS in a safe DIRECTION, not just at a "BACKSTOP".

I also live in a neighborhood and I do the vast majority of my practicing at the range because there are kids around. During the archery season I do occasionally shoot 20 yards into my garage, to make sure I haven't knocked something loose, only during the school day. I used to use hay bales for a backstop but they are tough on the vanes. Try hanging a couple of layers of carpet over a 2x4. That should stop a miss without tearing up the arrows. Besides you can probably get carpet waste for free from any carpet place. They have to pay to dispose of it.

I about spit my soda all over my monitor.

On a serious note tho you need to find another place to shoot. Why would you even have a target where you could hit something behind it? That is just plain stupid, and dangerous. In my neighborhood you are not even supposed to shoot your bow and can even get a ticket or have your bow taken away. Im not saying i dont shoot there but i have hundreds of acres of woods behind my house and not houses. I would find a local shop to shoot at personally.

this is my excellent shooting setup

MichaelHunsucker 04-26-2007 03:18 PM

RE: stopping arrows

There is nothing excelent about that setup...theres a house only 50 yards or so behind the target.

If your hitting your neighbors car YOU HAVE A PROBLEM.

Find a different place to shoot that has a safe backdrop regardless of your 'arrow stopping' setup. It doesnt look like your in a resedential area, im sure there is a better place for you to put your target. Come one man...your just asking for something bad to happen.

yeah ive been trying to find a new setup. my yard is an acre of land back in the woods a little and its about 100 yds long (may be slight off) but only like 40 wide so im not sure about where to put it

There is a house in direct line of your target![:o]. That's just wrong dude. I can't believe you hit his car and your still considering shooting.

Good thing your not my neighbor.

There is no backstop that will make that situation safe, unless it's huge, like the side of buiding.

Paul

Oh, my God, your a kid still in school? If I was your dad I would whip your butt for doing that. You certainly wouldn't have a bow anymore. Lucky they didn't get sued, keep it up and they might.

Your neighbor must be a taco short of a value meal as well, to put up with you flinging arrows towards his house and car!

RE: stopping arrows

My advise is to find some placeelseto shoot. If an arrow bounces off something and hits a human being "it ain't goin' to be pretty".

He may be a hunter but others in the neighborhood my not be.
You have to be careful how you present yourself as a bowhunter.
The only way, is a positive way.

I don't mean to preach, but you're asking for trouble.

MN/Kyle 04-26-2007 10:35 PM

RE: stopping arrows

eh, what the heck...quit shooting, you already shot the vitals out of that buck! You are dialed in.

Why couldn't you rotate the target 90 degrees and shoot that way, are there houses? Right now, a 40 yard shot and in should be efficiant enough at this time.
