working at a pro shop
there is a new pro shop going in close to where i live and i was thinking about asking for a job their. but i was wondering do you get to hunt as much as you'd like to if you work there, or is it basically saying good bye to hunting season?

RE: working at a pro shop
it's a job isn't it!!! My guess is the owner will be out hunting, since you will be working! Sorry, but that's the way it usualy works.

RE: working at a pro shop
Most likely you'll get it the same as every other person, two days off a week. These days off may not be Saturdays and Sundays either, so if you hunt with someone else on those days, you may not get the chance to do that.

RE: working at a pro shop
Are you talking about a part time or full time position. If it is a full time position then I would imagine it being much as the folks above mentioned. If it is a part time position then I am sure you should be able to work something out with the other employees in terms of a hunting season schedule.
...at least that is how it is down where I work. ;) |
RE: working at a pro shop
You are supposed to get 2 days off per week?
I'm going to have to have a talk with my boss:D |

RE: working at a pro shop
I once talked to a shop owner about that. I was interested in either working in a shop, or me and a buddy wanted to open up a target shooting place with a small shop in it.
His response was "Do you like hunting?, Do you like shooting your bow?" I said yes, and said then don't work in a pro shop or open your own place. He said he rarely gets to hunt when he wants to because his most hectic time is during bow season. Everyone waits until the last minute and they want it yesterday. He said he was about to retire so he could start hunting again. He ended up passing away before he could sell the place and retire though[&o]. I personally wouldn't mind working in a small shop though, as long as I didn't have to ring people up. I love archery and helping people, but I don't like dealing with money. I would actually rather be a coach than a tech to be honest. Paul |

RE: working at a pro shop
Hunting season is the busy time of the year, what do you think? But you could ask them before you comit, maybe they don't hunt.

RE: working at a pro shop
id definently talk to them...see if they even need people...and youll likely get atleast a day or 2 off per week...like most jobs...
but hunting season is the busy time for sure.... i know a gun shop owner...hes never open on sundays and usually closes early on fridays and saturdays..out rifle season opens on monday morning after thanksgiving. he used to head to camp saturday after work...it got so bad that he was there till 12PM and later on saturday night and had a line waiting to be there sunday. he figured sales were more important than hunting....he surely made a heap of cash that weekend and all through the season....just had to give up camp and hunting for it... but since your not the owner...you might weasle your way around it a bit...the owner cant make you work ALL DAY EVERY DAY....:D lol...... |

Paul: If you want a job, stop by the shop!;)
There was a time when I kept the shop open 7 days a week all year. Then I decided to close 2 days a week from December through June. Then it became November through June. Now it's November through July. I feel, at my age, that working 7 days a week from August 1st throught October 31st is enough. What has happened is that the customers are starting to come in earlier before the season to get my service without as much of a rush. This distributes my income over a longer period of time and gives me some time off to hunt with my son. The days we have off are Wednesday and Saturday. Many ask, why Saturday?. The reason is we can't hunt Sunday in Maryland and, with my son in school, the only day he has to hunt is Saturday. Those two days off during the off-season is valuable to get things done around my house. My competition about 7 miles south liked the idea so much that he is now doing the same thing. We figure that most of our customers ought to be in the woods on Saturday anyway, so why not us going hunting. If they break anything they can bring it to us on Sunday. Sounds like a great plan to me.:D |
RE: working at a pro shop
probably miss out on some hunting

As was said, It's a job and also who do you think will be servicing and preping all the customers equipment. True story here, "Wife and I both ride Harleys and enjoy(ed) all the road trips to variouse bike weeks as well as local rides and vacations. She gets a job (which she wanted very much) at the local H-D dealership and quess who is always working when everyone else is packing up to head outta town? I bet you have guessed. That's why I wrote Enjoy(ed). Just something to think about.
