I think taking him to a ranch is an excellent idea. As long as he has shown the needed skill and techniques, reward him with a hunting trip. You might also consider hunting for hogs. Turkeys have such a small kill zone. Hogs are a little bigger and I believe 40# is enough to kill one. Perhaps someone else knows for sure.

KEEP IT LEGAL. KEEP IT SAFE. OR WE MAY NOT GET TO KEEP IT AT ALL.

krisken, a buddy had his son in the shop at the beginning of the year to set up his bow, he has a PSE spyder I set it up at 38lbs taught him to shoot the right way, opening day of bow he killed a 85lb doe pass thru, and 2 week later he got a 125lb spike, the broadhed (muzzy85 I think) went thru the spike but the arrow stayed and the deer only went 45yards, you sons bow should bring down a whitetail if he hit it where I needs to be hit, In the heart. indians were killing deer long before compounds were developed and speeds hit over 150fps. maryland has a 35lb restriction and I know of bunches of kids who have killed whitetail at that weight

krisken, take him hunting. If he can hit the kill zone consistently within his comfort zone, why not? I think 40# would do for whitetail. Ohio has a 40# minimum. With the plate in a hog's shoulder, you might be taking chances on a hit too far forward. I'd say a Muzzy or Thunderhead would be a good chioce for broadheads at 75-85 gr. Get that Rascal out there.

I think a 2 blade cut on impact blade would get the best penetration. Recurve shooters typically get less kinetic energy (heavy arrow lighter poundage = less KE) that is why this design has prevailed with that equipment. I shoot 2 blade Ace broadheads in my recurve and use 3 blade Thunderheads with my compound. Using a 40# bow you want as much penetration as possible, you get that with a 2 blade.

You could try these broad heads they are 2 blade I have used them in the past with great results.

http://www.ribtek.com/

They are nicely priced too so he can lose a few and wont break the bank.

Texas has a min of 40lb for hunting deer.
If you do take him hog hunting try and take a 1/4ing away shot they have a tough gristle plate over the shoulder.

I would say 40# is plenty for a whitetail deer too...especially with a modern 40# youth bow like a Bowtech. Hogs have a much thicker hide so that may be iffy. Will kill a turkey for sure but thats a smaller target and also very much harder to even get a bow shot on a turkey than a deer.

If he cant legally hunt where you live due to age limits a ranch would be a great idea. Maybe you could talk the ranch owner into a cull hunt(much cheaper) for him and you could sit in a blind with him for the hunt.

** I almost got him but I refuse to take a marginal shot **

If it were my son I would up the broadhead wieght to 100 grns, and he would be shooting the Magnus stinger. I believe it to be the very best broadhead for lower energy setups. I don't have a problem at all with taking your son to a range or preserve. That is provided they run a quality operation with a decent amount of property to hunt. In fact I sounds like an excellent idea. Just curious how old is your son, and at what age is he legaly able to hunt NY.
With a 40lb bow of modern make, with properly tuned and matched arrows and broadheads he should be able to hunt deer size game if the shots are limited to 25 yards or less.

TAKE YOUR KIDS HUNTING AND YOU WON'T BE HUNTING FOR YOUR KIDS

I shoot a Mathews Q2 26" draw and 40 pounds. I shot 2 deer this year with my bow, both complete pass throughs/double lung hits, and one went 25 yards the other ten. I use Carbon Express 100 arrows with Muzzy 4 blade 100 broadheads. Both shots I got about 4" of Earth also!!!
