Bad Hit!

Well fella's I made a bad hit on one today, on the way to work! Darn doe was crossing the Turnpike. I saw her in the median strip from a distance and immediately started slowing down (cruise set at 75mph). I kept moving right and she kept coming. By the time I hit her I was probably only doing 20-25 and completely off the road in a grassy strip. I think I hit her with the driverside corner and just rolld her under enough to break her front leg and mess up her ribs and side. She went down still alive and laid behind my truck. She made a few attempts to get to her feet and the broken leg made her head out into the traffic. Luckily she never made it. I had nothing in my truck to humanly finish the job! I did have my golf clubs but standing by the highway dispatching her with a brand new 9 iron didn't seem like a wise move. She did make it into the woods finally. But she won't last. First deer I ever hit with a car..man I feel like crap!! There was no damage to my Blazer. I did flag down an Ohio State Highway Patrol but he could not do anything as she was no longer posing a "threat" to safety.

Yeah, they are not too smart when it comes to dealing with vehicles. I had a button buck actually run into the side of my truck while I was stopped. I too saw him trotting across a field headed towards the road. I kept slowing down and he kept coming. Finally I was stopped in the middle of the road. He then skidded across the road and ran head first into my drivers door. You can still see the dent if you look along the door. He got back to his feet and took off none the worse for his experiance.

Sad news Gr8, sorry to hear that but it sounds like you tried. I only ever hit one, she came out of no where and it was instant for her. I picked her up, called and used what I could from her. It's always tough. I know carry something to dispatch any that I know won't make it. I'm not sure how law enforcement works as far as having to account for bullets, etc but he either wasn't allowed or wasn't a hunter.

Glad you weren't hurt......Hope the vehicle isn't too bad....

I believe it was Ron "Tater Salad" White that said if you could mount headlights and a horn to the front of an arrow, the deer would actually jump in front of it....:D

Yep heading west. Just going over the hill to the Meander Crossing. But technically it was still on the I-76 portion.

I wouldn't be surprised if she lives. I see three legged all of the time. Whitetails have an amazing will to survive.
