Sitting or standing.....What do you do?

Another post got me thinking how others do it. I probably split my time sitting and standing......and keep my bow on a hook. It's easier for me to go from sitting to standing without a bow in my hand.......and it's at the right spot when I'm standing. My bow's also already vertical while it's on the hook.

I've got a buddy who stands ALL THE TIME. I wish I could do it, comfortably. I can't.

Again.....no wrong answer......just curious.

I do the same as you. I also try to take shots standing. I was able to stand and draw back on one of 8 toms last fall without being detected. So for now, I'm not changing my way of doing things.

I probably stand a majority of the time, especially when deer activity is high. If i dont see deer for a while ill take a seat and relax...unless hunting from a crotch stand, then i guess you have no choice but to stand [8D]

RE: Sitting or standing.....What do you do?

I sit most of the time, but I keep my bow across my lap. Sometimes I will stand, just to strech, or to get a better look around. I also stand everytime I see a deer in the distance or one that comes out of nowhere, but hasn't spotted me. The only time I am not holding my bow is when I get a snack, drink, or when nature calls.

I for the most part sit, with top of my bow hanging eye level on a ez hanger when doing so. I stand for short periods of time, but do better minimizing my movement when sitting.

I stand during "prime time", then usually split it up the rest of the time on stand. My bow is always within reach hanging on a bow holder.

Jeff I'm like you I split my time between both. I put a bow holder on the side of my climbling platform to hold my bow.

I sit most of the time and try to position myself to shootwhie seatedif possible. If a deer is approaching from behind, I stand.

RE: Sitting or standing.....What do you do?

I split my time 30 minutes standing and 10 sitting. I have been doing this for a couple of years and have only been cought sitting 2 or 3 times.

Pretty much the same as everyone else. Sit and stand.

I stand 95% of the time. I take an occasional sit down break. Afew minutes at a time. I also hold my bow with nocked arrow 95% of the time.

RE: Sitting or standing.....What do you do?

I probably sit most of the time on stand with bow on my lap. I don't want that extra movement turning to grab the bow if its hanging on a hook. I mean shucks...I already have to stand up. :)

Fair enough, duc......

But doesn't it stand to reason that MOREthings aremoving if you have your bow in your hand (that's been MY thinking)? I REALLY don't think it's a big deal.....but I have thought of this. Like I said, too......I can stand with LESS movement if I don't have to contend with my bow.

Different strokes, I guess.

RE: Sitting or standing.....What do you do?

I spend most of my time sitting with my bow in hand. I find that I have MUCH less movement when I'm sitting. I use my hearing and eyesight to pick up deer movement and I slowly stand to make my shot. Sometimes I get caught and have to make a shot sitting, that's ok and I have killed plenty of deer from the seated position.

I find that there is far less movement with the bow in my hand. I don't have to reach for anything, it's already there I simply attach my release (sometimes it already is attached) slowly raise then draw my bow. I never have to take my eyes off of the deer.

If I feel like standing I just stand stright up and the bow basically doesn't leave my lap. If you try this you will find that the bow will pretty much stay in it's same position because as you stand up your arm extends naturaly, keeping the bow in it's same basic position. Again I am in a perfect position to raise, draw and shoot.

The last hour of shooting light you will almost always find me standing with my bow in hand and release attached. Things can happen real fast in those last minutes of light.

RE: Sitting or standing.....What do you do?

I sit-I have the bow on my lap 90% of the time or sitting with the end on my boot. I never stand up to shoot-don't have to-just draw when it's time. I can't remember shooting any deer from my tree stand that I was standing. I just feel it is unnecessary movement.
I have taken Black Bear, Whitetails & Wild hogsfrom as low as 8 feet.
Oh, a few Whitetail & hogs sitting on a stool on the ground too.

RE: Sitting or standing.....What do you do?

Further clarifications:

I stand when the deer are in my vicinity......because (in MY eyes)....I'm less likely to be silohuetted when I'm standing against the tree. I also hunt out of a viper.....and the rail makes it nearly impossible for ME to take a sitting shot. If I hunted out of a different stand (and I often DO).....I'd change my tactics (again, I DO) and wouldn't hesitate to take a sitting shot.

When I hunt out of my cobra.....my bow's still hanging......but at my SITTING bow hand height.

RE: Sitting or standing.....What do you do?

I sit most of the time as well. I usually just stay sitting for the shot as well.

tschaef 04-02-2007 02:38 PM

RE: Sitting or standing.....What do you do?

I sit most of the time, the area I hunt simply doesn't have the numbers of deer to justify standing (I usually hunt all day, or at least 4-5hrs at a time).

RE: Sitting or standing.....What do you do?

Sit 80% of the time. If I see a deer, then I'll stand until I decide if I'm going to try and take a shot.

RE: Sitting or standing.....What do you do?

In the morning I will stand as long as I can before I start getting figgity. Then I'll sit for awhile. In the evening I'll sit untill the last hour or so of light and stand the rest of the night.

I sit 95% of the time,less movement.

RE: Sitting or standing.....What do you do?

I sit while in the stand about 80% of the time. I stand only to stretch, an get up when see a deer I want to shoot at or to get a better view.

RE: Sitting or standing.....What do you do?

When I was younger I stood almost all the time. As I've aged I sit more than I used to. I usually do about 30 minutes of one and switch.

PreacherTony 04-02-2007 06:48 PM

RE: Sitting or standing.....What do you do?

I like to stand most of the time .....a perfecttree stand for me has a high seat, as movement is restricted to sit and stand.
