staring contest...with deer
today i was walking thru the woods to check it out after the winter and as i was walking i see 4 deer, except they saw me first. so i froze and we stood there for probably 10 mins just staring at each other, no one moved. so after the 10 mins, they started to eat and go on with their lives and just ignored me completely. i cant believe that i wont the staring contest! and this all happened about 150 yards from my house.
incase you were wondering there was a doe three fawns. this type of thing happen to anyone else and you win? or did they run away? do you think this could be because they are tame and used to people back there? |
RE: staring contest...with deer
It happens to me most of time I go into the woods but I see them first ( most of the time ) thru my binoc's , when I do see them I'll quietly sneek in closer.
When they do spot me thats when the stare down begins , I'll freeze and let them look me over while they stomp the ground and do the head bobble thing. After awhile they'll walk away or continue to feed , I take every precaution to be as quiet as I can be when walking thru the woods. When scouting for deer or turkeys for that matter , you should try to avoid stepping on twigs or limbs that could snap. Going out after a rain storm is a good time to be walking thru , the dead leaves are soft and wet and won't make noise when you walk. |
RE: staring contest...with deer
Ive done the stare down on three different bucks when I was hunting. I got one out of the three. Bucks are a lot smarter than does and will tend to want to get out of there as fast as possible after a staredown

RE: staring contest...with deer
I think it all depends on if they are looking at you becaust they smell you ... I had 2 twin eight pointers this past season 12 yards from my stand ... the one looked at me and jumped 3 feet back ... kept looking at me .. after a few minutes, the one that saw me, went back to eating an apple, as the other one just kept eating and slowly taking steps .... the outcome? .... 13 yard broadside shot ..... I decided that was a good time to get target panic, and I slipped the arrow perfectly right under his chest ... complete miss [:@]
The only time I have ever had a deer run from me was if he smelled me .... buck or doe .... |
