First Turkey of the Year

Well we got our first turkey of the year on the ground opening day of Nebraska archery season. It was a great looking 2 year old pure Merriam. Hopefully we will get a few more in Nebraska before Kansas and Missouri open.

Great looking bird you got there. Man I really love those Merriam Tail Feathers. I think they are the best looking subspecies.

Is that the new Realtree AP you guys have on? It blends into the background well in the pics.

Yeah, its the new Realtree APG. It blends in great out there. We havent had any trouble drawing back on the birds, especially when hunting from a pine tree blind :)

Nebraska is mostly flat and fileds. The Pine Ridge area is howver a national Forest with some small hills and trees as pictured.

No, this year we decided that since almost everyone else whoare videoing turkey hunts are using double bull we would try to get as many hunts as possible without one. We built natural blinds and used our camo to our advantage. It works better then you would think. It was a great trip till the snowstorm chased us out of there. We are now in SE Nebraska trying to fill our remaining tags. Hopefully we can get a few more in the next couple of days. Ill update if we do any good.

Small hills my A** hahaa jk

Yeah the pine ridge area is awesome. It is one of the few places with pure merriams. Those small hillls seem like small mountains when chasin those darn birds! Im glad to get back to hunting easterns on some more familiar terrain! ;)

Sorry, I have been living in Nebraska for about 6 years and I am missing the rockies in Wyoming. They are small compared to what I used to hunt elk in. Lots of turkeys up there though.
