New 3D toy w/ Pics.........Martin shoot through custom
Some of you have heard me mention the 3D bow I am building. Well it's not done yet due to some mistakes I made in specifying equipment, but it is almost there........
This year I decided I wanted to customize a bow that would fit the exact specs of what I wanted in a competitive 3D bow. Afterall, that is one of the huge benefits of Martin, they will gladly customize and build anything you want through their custom shop. I have monkey arms for my height. I have a 75" wingspan and am only just a hair short of 6' tall. Because of this, I don't need a speed bow to get acceptable speeds for 3D. I like the slayer and shot one well in Harrisburg, but really wanted something with much less reflex in the riser for more forgiveness. For most people the slayer is a perfect 3D bow, however I wanted something slightly different. I like the Scepter 4 riser used in my indoor bow a LOT and I really prefer a 37-38" bow for 3D and outdoor use.........the scepter normally comes 43" ata using the 17" elite limbs. I also think the Scepter has one of if not the best grips on any bow I have ever shot. It is very comparable to the Apex series of bows by Mathews. Plus now I can have a bow with the same grip for all forms of competitive archery.......a big plus for me. The bow I am building contains the following parts. Black ghost flame Scepter 4 riser 14" Mag limbs Nitrous X cams Barnsdale doovawappi cable spreader system Gibblet string/cables I originally ordered a C base nitrous cam for the bow because the B base was only supposed to go to 29.5". My draw length is setup right now at 29 13/16". I didn't realize that the cable spreader system for the shoot through system was going to shorten the cable length and thus lengthen the draw length. No matter what I did the other night when assembling components the bow was 1/4" long for what I wanted. This is good and bad news. Bad news is that it will be another week or so till the new B base nitrous cams and string get here to correct this problem. The good news is that a B base nitrous cam is smaller in circumference so there will be more cam rotation and less brace height.......i.e. more speed. This will allow me to shoot it at a lower draw weight and get acceptable 3D speed. I should have all the new parts to get it shooting by early next week. Final specs should be around 37.5" ata, and 7.5" brace height. At my draw length at 5gpp and a loaded up string it should do around 310 or so...........I won't be shooting it that fast though. I expect to shoot it around 285 with a X-cutter arrow. Final parts list for the bow completely setup is as follows: Scepter 4 Mag/Nitrous X - 29 13/16" draw, 65lbs Gibblet string/cables Barnsdale Doovawappi cable spreaders Copper John Deadnuts 2 Competition sight Doinker Carbon Elite 11.5" Trophy Taker Spring Steel 1 hole (ASA + Local 3D) 351 grain GoldTip X-Cutter Pro's w/ Blazers + 90 grain glue ins Carter Just Cuz release Here are pics of what it looks like now. The new cams will look just like this, just smaller in size a bit. Pics don't do the bow justice........ Many thanks to gibblet for helping me to make this bow happen. I really really appreciate the help! ;) Black ghost flame riser: ![]() This pic shows the shoot through cables and barnsdale cable spreader system......i.e. no cam lean or limb twist or torque on the system from wrenching the cables over to a cable slide. Straight shot down the pipe from full draw to static. The spreaders let me get a fletched fat line cutter shaft like the X-cutter through there with fletch clearance. ![]() One last pic: ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Wow Nice..Love the riser..But man those are some ugly strings..They pull the eye away from the workmanship of the bow, in my opinion.

Great looking bow. I saw the Dave's string separator when he was first using it on his bows, very cool piece of equipment. I love the strings too!

Looks good. It sounds like the specs should be great for your purpose. I'd prefer a little more speed, but you're probably a better judge of distance than I am. You'll have to let us know how she performs when you get your new cams.

Thanks for the comments guys. The bow does look great, I am thrilled with it. Again I want to thank the guys at Martin and Gibblet as well for the help.......not a lot of companies will help or support you doing something like this.
I really can't wait till it is all tuned and set up. Hopefully next week this time everything is done so I can start shooting it. Our first of the local circuit 3D shoots is coming up on 4/11 and it is at myhome club in Clifton Park. I hope to have the bows debut at that shoot. Any of you locals that want to have some fun should head out to this event! I know a few of you on here are close to me. I will post more information on exact specs of the bow when everything is done next week. ~Matt |

w00t!!!!
All the items are here now........ ![]() New string and new cams are in, and I get to build it, set to proper draw length, and time the cams tonight. Unfortunately I have to work late and won't get home till late, so I won't be able to shoot it till tomorrow. We got a new chrono at the shop so I will bring it with me tomorrow and get it on the chrono to see how fast it is too. Our local club is hosting a 3D shoot this upcoming weekend too........hopefully I can get it tuned up by then. |

With those colors, if I didn't know better I'd think you were a Baltimore Orioles fan.

Alright, it is all together. Last night I ran into a problem and had to swap limbs out because the original ones I had maxed out at 86lbs. Luckily after work today I headed to the shop and we had another brand new pair that maxed out at 67lbs.....perfect. Got my cam lean dialed in by measuring ATA on both sides and adjusted so both were dead on the same, and then used the old arrow on the cams trick to eyeball for lean. Wish I had the nifty tool Len designed and a laser but this will do for now. After this I had to put a several twists in the cables to get the holding weight and draw length perfect and took one turn out of the limbs to get it back in check and now she sits at 68lbs finished.
Final specs are 37 7/8" ATA, and 7.75" brace. I put a 355 grain arrow downrange at 286-287fps at a measured 29 13/16" AMO draw length when had it down at 64lbs with a loaded up string. I am probably doing 290ish or so as it is setup now and may have to weigh the arrows down a bit because I am only looking for 280-285 to get the pin gaps I want. I am currently shooting GT xcutter pro's and haven't cut them yet but they should weigh in around 350-352 grains or so and I may need to add in 10 grain weights to the points for the setup to be perfect. Tomorrow I am off to creep and walkback tune the bow, put it back through the chrono, and hopefully get it sighted in out to 40 yards. My first outdoor 3D event of the year is Sunday. |
RE: New 3D toy w/ Pics.........Martin shoot through custom
Rick please stop... my brain hurts with all that. LOL Do you have any fun at all with shooting. LOL I got a string, loop, sight and an arrow. It's hard to see it fly and it hits somewhere near where I want.:D
