How much is too much???
I realize that practice is the only way to have a consistent, reliable shot, but is there such a thing as shooting too much? Other than the common wear that is associated with shooting your bowalot (serving wear, string wear, etc.), is there any extra risk if you are shooting, say 100 arrows a day all week long? Thanks!

RE: How much is too much???
If you exert yourself to the point of exhaustion when you shoot you'll likely develop poor form and bad habits. If you end a session of shooting when you can no longer draw your bow and hold steady on target, you've shot too much.
I shoot roughly a dozen arrows a day. Some days more, some days less. I feel I shoot enough to keep the muscles in shape and the form in decent working condition. I don't shoot in any leagues other than those I participate in here, so shooting any more than that isn't necessary. |
RE: How much is too much???
I have my bow set at a managable weight, so I don't get shaky or unfocused after shooting alot. Iget so intoshooting that I usually willlaunch about an extra 5-6 series of arrows after I planned on stopping. Without the exhaustion factor hindering form and concentration, can this put an unhealthy strain on the bow?

I shoot maybe 30-45 minutes, about 4 days a week starting about 2 mths before bow season.

RE: How much is too much???
my first week or 2 i shot 1000s of arrows...no joke. before work..after work...all day on days i didnt work. literally 100s of arrows a day. to make a long story short i jacked up my shoulder and couldnt draw my bow let alone shot it. for about a week or 2. i never got tired or sore or anything...never had a problem holding steady etc...id shoot 10 or 20...jump in the pool...shot 20 more..cut a little grass..shoot more..get a drink..shoot more..eat lunch..id do that all day. the beauty of having a 40yd backyard range i guess. convinent...leave the targets out there and shoot when i got a few minutes. so i never got sore or fatigued or anything...but man after a week or 2 of literally 1000s of arrows my shoulder quit. said no more. i learned my lesson:eek:
i was in a rush because it was july or so and i just got my first bow. had to get good enough to hunt by the end of august..when id be back to college and only shooting on weekends so i over did it to make up for less time to shoot... also wore out a string in short order! this year im just going to take it easy...shot no more then 50 a day when im off or so...still alot more than some guys but i should be fine with that..but that wont be EVERY day...ill work most days and not get to shoot much..and now i only shoot weekends when im not at college and i already started shooting about a month ago...no rushing this year!! |
RE: How much is too much???
In the off season I shoot every other week approx 100-150 arrows.
Just before season I will shoot once a week approx 100-150 arrows. During the season, I will shoot 6 times a day when I hunt. Not at dear (usually) but at a target when I break for lunch or dinner. This not only keeps my form but also keeps my mind from entering into dissapointment. Just don't wear yourself out to the point where your form suffers. Everybody is different and I believe you need to test yourself to know your limits. I live in an apartment in Baltimore so the luxury of shooting is often costly and very time consumingbecause of the travel time. That is why I shoot how I shoot. |
RE: How much is too much???
I know what you mean MDBuck. I live in Indiana right now about 10 minutes from a kicka$$ indoor/outdoor range that is loaded with courses and other cool stuff,so I spend alot of my free time plugging 3-D in the woods there. I'm moving to the Miami area in a few months though, and heard ranges are much rarer down there, so my range time will be cut drastically.Guess I'll have to find a way to stay sharp to go hogging in the Everglades!

RE: How much is too much???
I'll shoot once a week in the off season, then go to 60 shots every otherday a month before season. I'll try to shot a few everyday during the season just to keep loose and a good confidence level for that B & C that never wanders by

RE: How much is too much???
There is a point where it gets to be too much. I think I'm there now. Ever since I got my Vectrix about a month ago, I've been shootingabout every 3 dayson average. I guess that isn't all that often but when I do shoot, I'll go at it for 1-2 hours. Like someone else posted, I too am beginning to "jack up" my shoulder. Hopefully cutting the time to half an hour each session might not be so hard on the shoulder.

RE: How much is too much???
I just can't stop once I start shooting at the range! I've had my bow only a few weeks,so 1-2 hours has been common for me also. I have my poundage set at about 62, so I can ripupwards of 200 shots in one session. After hearing these shoulder stories, twice a week is going to be my new regiment. The withdrawal is going to kill me though!

RE: How much is too much???
Just got my new SBXT a little less than a month ago and I've been shooting it pretty regular. Probably about every other day or so.
My normal schedule is to lift on tues/thurs nights so that rules out shooting but on M-W-F when I normally lift in the mornings....I shoot those nights. Sometimes not nearly as many arrows as the previous time but I'm getting awfully good with my new bow and am loving it! Didn't shoot NEARLY this much when I had my old bow. eh...maybe the newness will wear off one of these days but I'm enjoying it now. |
RE: How much is too much???
as far as shooting to much, i havent reached that point yet,my hunting partner has a 30 yd range set up in his basement and i have a 25yd in my basement, i shoot probably atleast 6 nights a week if not 7, and on the avarage night i'll sling between 100 and 200 arrows depending on if were playing horse or just shooting or what not, as far as the shoulder goes i shoot at 71 pounds and havent had a problem yet, but im also just 24 so maybe it will catch up to me in the next 10 yrs.....but untill then, shoot on

RE: How much is too much???
I normally shoot about 20 arrows per session, sometimes less. I have my days where I just feel like shooting and will shoot a hundred or so, but as soon as I begin to tire I stop. Shooting when you are tired and sore from shooting only leads to bad habits.
This past Sunday I shot the first 5 arrows, they were all in the right spot, I put the bow away and was done. |
