I wouldn't push using mech's on an elk. Get yourself a good cut on contact head...

Now ol Huck knows some about elk hunt'n although his sis does out hunt him. :D Spitfires. . . Some swear by them, some cuss them. Since I have never shot an elk with a spitfire, I will not comment on how the are for elk. I have shot them ondeer and turkeys. They are awesome on turkeys. I did kill a buck with the 3-bladesbut did not get full penitration on a broadside shot from a tuned, 70 lb bow shooting a 400+ grain arrow. I prefer fixed blades andhope to put one of my thunderheads through an elk's boiler roomsomeday. But I am telling you ol huck has killed some elk.

Hey huck, Sis's bull is bigger than anything I have seen you holding up. What up with that? :D;)

I shot my bull last year at about 22 yards, broadside. I hit the flat of the shoulder bone on the near side and my arrow stopped at the flat of the shoulder bone on the opposite side, poked a hole in the off side, but didn't go through. I wonder how much penetration I would've gotten with a mech. head of any kind. I was using an inner-loc 100 gr. stainless head!

Boy Steve, You sure do know how to rub it in...LOL. It's all good! I wouldn't have it any other way...I'm kinda proud of the fact I taught her well (wonder who's teaching whom though).

I thought you and Vaughn were coming back this year?

There's something magical about chasing elk with a bow...! I love it!

A few things to think about! I shoot both fixed and mech.. Last year i shot a whitetail at 15 yrds with a spitfire. the shot was 1/4ing away, complete passthru and devastating the buck didnt even run away he kicked and walked 40 yrds and laid down and died in sight. that said my arrow did deflect of something causing it to redirect out sidewayz. I have also shot an Az elk at 15 yrs with a magnus buzzcut 3/4 passthru bull ran 80yrds.
if i was to hunt elk with a mech it would be with a much smaller cutting diamiter mech. with rear slidding blades, and would only take close shots
with a well tuned bow!!! cant stress that enough..as well as sharp blades.. To each his own..

Thanks, guys. I bought the Spitfires for turkey hunting (right around the corner :)), and intended all along to use the G5 Montec for big game. And the Montec's shoot well - hit slightly higher than field points and group a little bigger. The spitfire appears to be totally interchangeable with the field tips for accuracy and point of impact.

Huck,
Since Vaughn twisted off and jumped ship, I don't hear much from him. I will see him this weekend at the Paris shoot. At least I am supposed to seehim. Not sure what will happen this fall but I will be elkhunting somewhere. Absolutely loved it last year. Thanks for helping us out.
Later,

I used the G5's last year on everything, and had a pass through on everything I shot with them, great broadhead!!!

I shot a 5x5 bull in Colorado a few years ago with a 2314 and Spitfire broadheads.
The bull did not go far at all, about 70 yards and was dead. But now that I am
older and a little wiser I don't think I would use that broadhead on elk again.
I will probably stick with Wasp SST 3 blades for elk now.

Just curious dsheally, if the spitfire worked once, why would you change? How much penetration did you get? How far was the shot? What was your equipment such as arrow weight and draw weight?
