Armour Plated Doe
Shot a doe several years ago at a pretty steep qaurtering away angle. My arrow hit exactly where I was aiming and should have exited either through or slightly in front of the off side shoulder, but it didnt. It slid inbetween the ribs and hide until it hit the onside arm pit and then penetrated the chest cavity right infront of the heart. I was just curious if anyone has had anything remotely similar happen.

were you using mechanicals??

RE: Armour Plated Doe
oops sorry left that part out, no wasnt using mechanicals i was using muzzy 100gr 3 blade heads.

RE: Armour Plated Doe
i shot a doe two years ago and had that happen. I was also shooting fixed blades. Im not sure what causes it...pretty wierd though

RE: Armour Plated Doe
Must have been a real hard angle! I don't think i have heard of a shot ending up like that!

RE: Armour Plated Doe
Another strange thing happened on another doe, similar instance as before but arrow hit were it was suppose to but the broadhead only made one tiny slice about oh maybe an 1/8 of an inch on the inside back edge of the left lung and on the inside front edge of the right lung, so it almost went inbetween both lungs. anyone ever have that happen.

RE: Armour Plated Doe
The arrow gets deflected somehow...
|
RE: Armour Plated Doe
I think what happened is kinda like what can happen with expandables. The blade on the muzzy hit before the tip could dig in.

RE: Armour Plated Doe
I read a great article about penetration, and how broadhead design effects the outcome. The angle of the blades has alot to do with how well a broadhead will penetrate on extreme quartering angles. In the article, the author shot a Rocky Mountain Ti 125, and a Ti 100. Made by the same company but the 125 penetrated much better on a hard angle shot. This was said to be because of the blade angle between the two heads not the 25 grain weight differential. Just a little insight.

RE: Armour Plated Doe
Penatration really wasnt an issue, the arrow went through over 2 feet of deer, busted ribs and everything. It just didnt dig in and penatrate where it was suppose to.

OMG, fixed blade heads are terrible everyone should dump them and start using mechs. Muzzys arejunk! You guys that shoot fixed heads are slob hunters that take poor shots thinking your fixed blade heads can do anything!!!
OK, before anyone gets too fired up, that was extreme sarcasm poking fun of the anti-mechanical crowd. All in fun guys, it just goes to show that wierd things can happen no matter what equipment you use. Back to enjoying your breakfast. |

Had a buddy a few years ago who was just getting in to bow hunting. We went on a hog hunt near where we lived in SC in early October and saw a few on the edge of a field, just out from an old logging path. We swung around and had the wind perfect. We snuck up to 32 yards from a large boar, in the 225# range. My buddy was shooting an older PSE that he picked up at a pawn shop. Just a starter bow, but he shot it very well and had taken a few smaller pigs and a deer with it already that year. If memory serves me, he was shooting 2117s and 100gr Thunderheads, which are excellent broadheads in my opinion. He shot the hog a little forward at dead broadside and the arrow lodged in the shield. The hog squeeled, whipped around, bit the arrow off and trotted away like nothing happened. Only got about 1.5" of penetration. Just goes to show how hard those shoulders are on older pigs. Stopped that arrow cold. Later that same day, he shot a 300# sow quartering away and got a complete pass through. She was dead inside 75 yards.

RE: Armour Plated Doe
Shooting an arrow straight between two ribs is going to react different than shooting between ribs at an angle. I to have had this happen and i think you get some deflection on the angled shots. but as long as it does the job all is good. Its just harder on arrows.
