40 Yard Group???

Okay... I don't have a steady enough hand to ever be a target shooter, but is this good progress for 5 weeks into shooting? This was the first group that I shot this afternoon. I decided to start at 40 yards and work my way in. I normally do it the other way around, so I end up tired by the time I get out to 40. Anyway, I feel like I'm making progress.

RE: 40 Yard Group???

Hey, guys... I just went back and read what I wrote. When I asked if this was good shooting for 5 weeks into archery, I wasn't patting myself on the back. It's a genuine question. I've been to a range four times, and each time I was the only one there. I've never even watched someone else shoot. I have a feeling that if I were to try to compete, this wouldn't be too good.

RE: 40 Yard Group???

Go ahead and pat yourself on the back LC. Are you consistantly getting similar groups at 40? If so, that's pretty good from that range.

Thats a very good group at 40 for only shooting 5 weeks. great shooting.

RE: 40 Yard Group???

aeroslinger,
Not truly consistent yet, but that may be because I've been practicing at 20-30 yards for a while before moving back to 40. This taught me that starting at the longer range tells me how my form is progressing. I'm still new to the 70 pound draw, and I can only manage about 25 to 30 shots before my arms start to get a little fatigued. I'll get there, though, if I have to go out and buy 15 pound dumbbells and stand holding them in a draw position. That was actually a suggested method of building the muscles needed to steady the bow.

That is a good group for 40 yards, I only practice about 45 minutes at the mostan I don't rush my shots.

Your ON FIRE BUD!!!!!! man yeha I like to see snipers WOW!!!!

ALL I CAN SAY IS WATCH OUT DEER AND ELK!!!!

now sight in at 70 yards thats my farthest pin cool.

LittleChief 02-28-2007 09:20 PM

RE: 40 Yard Group???

If I put a 70 yard pin in my bow, I'll need another sight. The viper sight I bought only came with three. Still, I like a challenge.:D

Heres the deal cheif buy some pins for your sight or mark your peep sight then raise it until your 40 yard pin is a 70

right now my bow is set up to go 100 yards and hit a hay bail

LC,
That is great shooting for 40yds, for an experienced guy, fora newbie that has only been shooting 5 wks, you may have more potential as a target shooter than you realize!!!

Great shooting! Looks like your getting her dialed it pretty good, especially @ 40 yrds. The real test is when your first buck walks out in front of you (not sure if you hunted yet). Your not quit as relaxed as you are shooting targets and that 70 pound draw will feel like 100..;). Great shooting though, keep it up and head to a couple shoots....You may like it!
I have never been to one, If I can dial in on the right bow for me....I may try!

RE: 40 Yard Group???

Simple rule of thumb that most hunting setups like to see is 1" per 10 yards.

20 yards= 2" group
30 yards= 3" group
40 yards= 4" group

YOU ARE WAY AHEAD OF THE LEARNING CURVE.

I think you got a shop that set you up well and explained things nicely.Plus your military background doesn't hurt either.;)

RE: 40 Yard Group???

Let's put it this way......

Our range has shots to 43 yds (indoors). I've seen an average of 10 points per target win every 3D shoot, there, except 1 in the last two years. All of your arows would be in the 10 rings of MOST targets.

If you can shoot those groups at 40 yds......it would stand to reason you could tighten them at shorter distances. Let's call a spade a spade........that group is better than "good".

All joking aside, very nice group. Keep up the practice.

That will put a deer down, good enough for me.

RE: 40 Yard Group???

Yes, that is a very good group for a new shooter or otherwise. Yes, it can get better, but so can everyone else. There are very few, if any, who are limited by their bow's ability. You better start shooting fewer arrows in a group or start aiming at different spots or you are going to end up replacing a lot of vanes, nocks, or entire shafs.

LittleChief 03-01-2007 06:55 AM

RE: 40 Yard Group???

I know what you mean. Idon't shoot at the same spot at 20 to 30 yards any more. Like I said in a post on the robin hood video, when it happens to me, I just hang my head and think "there goes another 10 bucks".

crutch 03-01-2007 08:27 AM

RE: 40 Yard Group???

maybe those botton two arrow had some deflection to them, or they may have been even tighter? Maybe shoot at each dot seperate and see if your still in that 4" group range.
nice shooting!

Good group. It will kill a deer, which is my main focus. Have you tried shooting broadheads yet?

LittleChief 03-01-2007 12:07 PM

RE: 40 Yard Group???

No, haven't tried broadheadsyet. Still making up my mind on which way to go, fixed or mechanical. I'd better decide soon. I'm going to try it out in the field on a hog hunt in June. Can't wait.

RE: 40 Yard Group???

LC, if that fits into a small pie plate, it's good enough for the vitals on a deer. That's the way I would judge it. Now concentrate on form. Each arrow shot w/the exact same form. Then watch your arrows tighten up. Let us know how it goes next few times u shoot. Nice group!

RE: 40 Yard Group???

I am right there with you. I bought my TomKat during the first week of Nov. First bow ever and pretty much taught myself. Within a few weeks I could robin hook arrows. at first it was cool, then i started adding up the price for the Gold Tip Hunter XT's I was shooting. I now just shot seperate dots on the targets. If you can consistantly hit what you are aiming at, then the group stuff is done with.

Hey littlechief, I must have got rid of the pic I saved, I will keep looking though. I also think when I saved the pic it was pretty blurry. The when I made it small it wasn't to bad. Could possibly send you this small one if you want it. I tried to make it bigger and it was pretty blurry.
