For the mad men of December
I recently saw a magazine article with that title and found it fitting. With the primary rut come and gone in most places (except the deep south), gun season come and gone in many places, temperatures reaching the lowest of the season, why would anyone hunt this time of year??
Because some of us know that the bucks are still there, hungrier than ever and there are still a few hot does out there too. And at this time it is never more true that
"A hunter will do anything for a buck"
I tagged some of my best bucks in December while hunting over food, they are still there, just be careful grabbing their antlers late in the season (they might come off)
For the mad men (and women) of December, please submit your late season experiences on my sighting survey ( http://www.thehunterseye.com/sightin...tingsurvey.htm )
Maybe together we can come up with some good information on the least understood month of the year.

Our bowseason stays in until the end of Jan. You are right, hunt close to the food. Around here they will be looking for white oak acorns, corn, soybeans and the best is winter wheat just coming up.

Just got back from a late season elk hunt on December 1st. I like the late hunts a lot especially since there are fewer fair-weather hunters stomping around on the public lands. If you are prepared for the elements then December hunting can be great...and the shorter days mean that you don't have to wake up as early to make it to the woods by dawn...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I used most of Saturday to check the tracks in my hunting areas. There was a fresh snow 48 hours before. I love reading tracks. Some places has very little activity and others were really tracked up. I figure 75% or more of that activity might be at night but at least I know they are there.

I usually like hunting after the weather turns colder, but the flu bug has taken me out the hunt the last couple of weeks, but as soon as I can stay in the woods without coughing, I'll be back out there.

I love to hunt the late season with a bow, the woods are not as crowded and the air is much more crisp as are the leaves. Its pretty cool, I have taken my second largest buck ever on Dec 23rd a few years ago. The Military base I primarily hunt on sponsors a "HARD CORE NIGHT" for all the hunters that hang in there to the "end" it consists of going out hunting on the last day of season then coming back to the "check in" and there are guys there grilling hot dogs,hamburgers and such, we all hang around and go inside the indoor archery range where there is chips, and side dishes and shoot the breeze of "the one that got away" they also get you to submit any unused tags with a $1.oo bill per unused tag and hold a raffle for the entire pot. Not a big event but nice just the same, all the food is prepared by and paid for by our bow club. You do not have to be a member of our club to join in, just be a "hard core hunter"

It is a great time, not to mention how good a hot burger or hotdog tastes the second you arrive with out having to drive home first. Not a big turn out, but it sure is fun, I have had some of my greatest times at this little event, not to mention seeing all the does grouped up this time of the year, as many as 22 standing arounrd your stand, no cover and 44 eyeballs watching for the slightest movement. As I said, our bow club along with the staff from the "Outdoor Recreation Dept" on the base put this on each and every year, most that turn out do not belong to our club,but gives you the oppertunity to get to know some good folks. I love it. It is a nice addition to a great day in the field.
