everyone pretty much summed it up, I hunt public land and I see a lot, what I do is find the high ground first then the closest food source and then look to the thick for the trails, they'll be there in the day, works for me also don be afraid to look for trails along the road side you would be surprised at how many deer I have teken within 60 yards of the road side with a bow. Winter time is THE BEst time to scout for deer becasue you can easily find the main and secondary trails bring a gps and start marking posable tree's for this fall, alsoold rub lines are good places to hang a game cam and monitor whats going through and at what time So you don't sit long non productice hours in a stand. That and read a lot I buy a lot of books and instructional dvdd's taht seriously have helped me especially seeing as I am self taught, Good Luck
