woah! thats pretty cool, ive never seen a black squirrel in person. are they very common where you live? around here we have common grays and fox squirrels. youll find the albinos in city oarks but not out in wild. No black ones to speak of, lol.

There are lots of blacks around here in town and in the woods. The browns get a little fiesty everynow and again. This guy here was15 feet above mytreestandand i had noidea.It took 3 acrons hitting me in the head to realize I was sitting in a poplar tree, not an oak. What a joker.

Both fox squirrels and gray squirrels can come in black. In fact Linnaeus named the fox squirrel Sciurus niger because the one he worked on was a black one. Black phase gray squirrels (Sciurus sciurus) are common here in Michigan. Black phase fox squirrels pretty uncommon around here. The two species can interbreed by the way, which can make for some interesting patterns, like fox squirrel color with a black tail, for example.
