how low in tree stand
what is the lowest you can be in tree stand for bow
|
RE: how low in tree stand
My rule of thumb is a min of 15 feet.
|
RE: how low in tree stand
14-15 feet. I put up my portables a couple of feet higher this year. At about 18 feet I had great results in the amount of deer I had within bow range. Only one deer busted me all year.

RE: how low in tree stand
I shot one last year about 9ft off the ground in a viper climber. What had happened, I borrowed a buddies summit(1st time) and when I got up about 15 ft, as I pulled bow up it came off pull rope.[:@] Time I climbed down and part way back up I was sweating real bad(over dressed). I stopped around 9ft to cool down, just stayed there and shot a doe at 22 yrds about hour after daylight.:)
I think most people stay around 15 feet. But I suppose there really isn't a "lowest". But the lower you go, there is a greaterrisk of getting busted (i.e. movement, scent).Like Hiawatha said, "rule of thumb around 15 ft". If you think thats to high, then go up where you are comfortable and start from there. Goodluck! Crutch |
RE: how low in tree stand
That depends on the terrain you could be on a hill and well camouflaged and be right on the ground sitting in your stand . i personally like to be 20 plus feet in the air

RE: how low in tree stand
I'm not a huge fan of hieghts so its usally 15feet in the tree. seems to be a good hieght.
|
RE: how low in tree stand
Well i've shoot deer from 10 feet off the ground to 18 feet off the ground. While i was hunting in the stand thats only 10 feet off the ground i had deer walk right under me.

RE: how low in tree stand
I have a Loggy Bayou climber and I usually get 12 feet high. I would like to go higher but never do. My permanent stands are at least 15 feet high. It seems no matter where I am I get busted all the time by turkey's. Deer never see me.Or at least the ones I see don't see me.

RE: how low in tree stand
most of my lockons are about 12-15 ft to the base of the platform. seems to be a good height. my dad doesnt like to hunt very high, and i do, so its a fair compromise.
when i hunt out of my climber, i hunt about 20-25 feet up. but that is usually during gun season. i think it depends on the terrain, and how high the understory is. i prefer to be up where i will have some branches behind me to break up my outline. |

RE: how low in tree stand
i HATE being lower than 20ft. But thats just me :D
|
RE: how low in tree stand
I like to be around 18 feet, but if the cover is there I will hang the stand lower.
|
RE: how low in tree stand
If you can't find anything but a naked tree, I go about 18-20 ft.
If I have background cover , especially in a pine of some type, 12-15 ft. would be fine. A pine also provides season long cover. The trick to a lower stand height is breaking up your outline and moving slowly when u draw. Try a pine w/ lots of low limbs if you're affraid of heights. |
RE: how low in tree stand
IM a 20 footer, but my son is still leary of heights yet, and he hunts 12' in ladder stands with no problems at all and kills deer. If you have a good background it helps alot as well as brushing in the stand as well. as mentioned hills are an issue as well.

RE: how low in tree stand
12-15ft. my area has a lot of low lying cedars,if you go much higher you might not see the ground!
|
RE: how low in tree stand
it all depends on what im hunting if im deer hunting i like to be about 12 feet or so for bow hunting and about 9 feet for gun depending on the wind and situation also. when i bear hunt i like to be right in close. this past year i was in a ladder about 8 feet off the ground while bear hunting. and i sat there for about an hour and had a real big sow probably 325#+ she was huge and she had two cubs with her. definatly real up close and personal its kinda of a scary feeling. but its your personal prefrence were ever you kill more animals

RE: how low in tree stand
I say 15ft. min. But I don't have one ladder stand that is below 20ft. I usually push my climers higher than that.
|
RE: how low in tree stand
Ive taken deer out of a stand 7 feet off the ground with a bow.
|
RE: how low in tree stand
16 ft to 20 is probably the highest we have to go, got some hemlock they break up your outline real nice;)
|
RE: how low in tree stand
It all depends on the area you're hunting and the amount of camoflouge you have around you to break up your outline.some guys swear on being at least 25' up. But I honestly think that if you have a tree with some good branches/limbs that will break you up nice than you can probably be as low as 10'. Just my opinion.

RE: how low in tree stand
I like my feet at 16 to 18', My Wife has a 12' ladder stand and has taken alot of Deer out of it, But she always takes the time to find a Tree that gives her great cover under the right wind conditions.

RE: how low in tree stand
Any height is better then the ground but the lower you are the harder to get away with things. But it can be opposite to with being to high because you can then be skylined and you dont want that eighter. I like to try for 20-25 feet up.
|
RE: how low in tree stand
I won't go below 16' with the average between 16'-18'. This from a fat old guy who had a phobia of heights before bow hunting.
|
RE: how low in tree stand
this last year i was only 10 feet off the ground. had a shot at the biggest buck i have seen....
|
RE: how low in tree stand
i agree going higher cant hurt, but ill also go on to say it wont help much either. Sitting still i skey, and blending in. Place your stands wherever the loest bulk of branches are in the trees if you have that luxury. If you have a stand such as my 12 foot double man ladder stand, wrap it in burlap to help. Camo Burlap will hide your entire bodies outline and movement, and if put up in spring or summer, deer get used to it and they wont pay any attention to it.
|
RE: how low in tree stand
15 ft time you are obvious to the animal
|
RE: how low in tree stand
I have usually hung my treestands around or above 15 feet but last year I hunted out of my hang on at about 11-12 feet and had shots at deer but I drew to early and held to long so I was all over the place. I have learned the higher the better I hunted out of a climber this year bout 30-35 feet up and the deer never even knew I was there
|
RE: how low in tree stand
I prefer to be over 15' high. But I have shot deer from a height of 3' before. I was using the stand as more of a seat on the corner of a very overgrown marsh. 3' put me just high enough to comfortably shoot over the marsh grass.
