Practicing with Broadheads

How much can yoou shoot a broadhead into a target (one that is made for broadheads) before they need to be sharpened before hunting with them. I am talking about a 100 gr. 3 blade muzzy

Personally, I would always sharpen the blades before hunting with them if you shot a target at all. Muzzy's blades don't hold an edge as long as some blades will. I sharpen or replace my blades if I shoot them at all into the target.

I shoot Muzzy 100 grain, 4 blade broadheads w/ practice blades. I see no appreciable difference in the point of impact with the practice blades as compared to the real blades. Besides, the practice blades are easier on your target.

And you don't have to dull your broadhead blades!;)

I shoot the 3-blade 100 gr. Muzzy and i never hunt with blades that i have shot into a target. The replacement blades only cost 8 bucks or so, so why not shoot the laser sharp ones. Just my.02.:D

These guys pretty much said it. If you shoot it into a target i would sharpen it before hunting or just use practice blades.

I only shoot broadheads here, in fact have never shot a field point in my life. I originally sacraficed one broadhead out of a pack and just shot that on all of my shafts. Now that i have taken a few animals i use them as practice broadheads. I personally will not hunt withhead that has been shot into an animal or a target b4, kind of a mind game i have. Want that baby spanky new and sharp enough to circumsise a fly.

I agree. Even once into a target is too many. Just buy an extra set of blades for practice only. Swap them out with fresh "virgin" blades before the hunt. Why take chances?

I always use the previous years hunting blades as practice blades and buy new blades every year for the real thing.

With muzzys, always use fresh blades. Even if you don't shoot them, if they've been in your quiver for a while during the season, you should probably change them out.

I shoot broadheads only. I practice with what I hunt with, that simple. I use three Muzzy's (three blade) for practice only andbrand new ones for the hunt. :)

Use the practice blades. If you are leary about doing that, and want to practice with the same setup as when you hunt, buy some more replacement blades and have one set for practice and one for hunting. There is no point in resharpening replacable blade heads...just buy new blades.

just once in a target will dull it a little i like mine brand new for hunting . once i use it .it is a practice arrow The blades can oxidize and loose there edge sitting in the quiver so you might want to sharpen or replace heads that didn't get shot for next season

Bob, I couldn't agree more ..... the foam in quivers WILL dull your heads ... Like you said, oxidation will roughen up the edges ... I truly believe that alot of deer that aren't recovered after being shot, would have had been found if the head was scary sharp .... but that's me ...

I have one set 4 target shooting & another set for hunting. But anytime I shoot one of the hunting ones, I replace the blades. They're relatively inexpensive.

I have separate heads for practice and for hunting. I touch up all of my hunting blades if they have been sitting around for a while.

Gotta be sharp--if i knick my finger with my broadheads i better look down and see part of my finger on the ground!:D;)

Why would you change a blade that has never been shot?

Corrosion, wear (in and out of the quiver) and abuse (banging around, depending on your quiver) all act on them. Test an unshot blade from last year against a new one and I think you'll see a difference.

I use seperate heads for practice.
I shoot 3 blade Rocky Mountain Ironheads & fix all my heads with new blades just b/4 the hunt. If they are in the quiver a long time I check them & may touch up if I feel they are getting dull. I AM very fussy on wheather my heads are sharp or not.
If you hunt with what you practice with I would replace all the blades (just my way).

RE: Practicing with Broadheads

Good point. Never thought of that. I think I'm okay since my quiver keeps all of the BHs apart from each other and they are not stuck in a chunck of foam, but it's worth taking a look at.

RE: Practicing with Broadheads

I shoot slick trick heads. I usually buy 9, set three aside for practice and never use those I practice with in the woods. They are tough heads, and I can usually practice with three forever, but me being as anal as I am, I even change my practice heads every year. Once a head has been shoot, I tend not to use it again for hunting. I'll take advantage of as much sharpness as I can get.
