So I went to a new spot today. Saw a ton of deer. Before it got light I had two come in and stand in ONE spot about 35 yards to my left for what seemed for ever. I could just make them out. They stayed there long enough for it to get good and light. I think they had spotted me moving before daylight and just froze. When it got light enough they checked me out and then came right in... about 24 yards. One was a button... the other a small doe. Another came in behind me and went up the hill, the first ones followed. As soon as they were gone a whole herd came in but to far for a shot. Then 4 nice does came in. I was on a double tree and the tree to my right front had a limb sticking out. It was too close. I tried to draw and my top bow limb would hit the limb. I leaned back for clearance and my elbow hit the tree. I eventually did a Hodini act, bent down laying kind of over my hand climber, under the limb and drew...20 yards. It looked clear. I took the shot..#$#*&*#^#%$%#($#(* and the arrow entered behind the shoulder about an inch below the back line. $#*%&#*&#*%#(*% The deer took off past me showing no sign of just being hit. She crossed the gully, up a hill and the last time I saw them she had her tail in the air leading the parade. So I look at the spot she stood expecting to see my arrow. NADA. I hung in there an hour and climbed down. A spray of blood at the hit spot... then a couple drops... another little splatter 20 yards further... and then just a drop here... a tiny drop there. I had marked her trail well including a nice big tree she went past on top of the ridge 150 yards away. When she started up the hill all blood ceased.... NO blood going up, on top, near the big tree,,.... NOTHING. I think I basically skinned her but instead of a slice I got and in and out above the spine.. really almost missed. I saw the white hit her and saw the hair all tuffed up.#%&*#&#$*&& deer anyway. In the early morning gloom I hadn't seen a few tee-niney twigs I had to shoot through. It's even possible she dropped, I hit some twigs etc etc etc. The arrow wasn't in the deer but we couldn't find it. It must have skipped funny and is somewhere in the foot deep oak leaves and grass. I call 20 a slam dunk...weird position and all. We ALL KNOW I WOULDN'T MISS ON MY OWN.<img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle> So, it wasn't long ago someone ask me, &quot;Don't you ever miss?&quot;..... Duuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... .. AHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhh What was the question again? Len shot a nice doe out of the same pack. We were only 50 yards apart.

Well at least you got to go out. I am only 15 and dont have my license(drivers) yet and I am havin a heck of a time just getting out hunting. I was supposed to go the last 2 weekends but did it ever happen. NO!!!! I hope i can atleast take another shot. I have never bow hunted yet but i am going to try. I got a nice 5x4 with a 18in inside spread in the gun season.

if it makes you feel any better i missed 3 this year and had one stolen but i got a second chance at the buck and harvested him 2 days later

Taking a shot that you are not absolutely positive is free of obstructions and is going to result in a clean, quick, and humane kill is irresponsible, unethical, and should never be taken in the first place!!! And I did something very, very similar Saturday on a very nice PY buck!!!<img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle> Haven't slept well since and relive the shot several times each day. It's been quite a while since I've wounded a deer and is certainly something I could go the rest of my life without doing and not miss it! Good luck the rest of the season.

david you know you may be getting a little old to be doing the contortionist thing! LOL Well it is good to hear that even some of the best miss/nick sometimes. I am sure you will make up for it though.

wolfen I am sure one of these days I will feel the pain you are feeling right now, so far I have been lucky is all I can say.

WOLFEN... I didn't see the twigs. In fact I had to wait for her to clear some brush before I could shoot. These things were toothpicks. I didn't see them until I looked through my binos to see if I could spot my arrow on the ground. I don't shoot through brush.... however, I do shoot through holes all the time. I hunt in thick stuff generally. I'm not even sure I hit a twig. Just offered it up as a possible excuse for missing what I aimed at at 20 yards. The deer were on red alert... it's quite possible she dropped at the shot too. Like I said... we all know I'd never miss on my own. davidmil...I know what you mean. After I went to begin the search for the buck that I wounded I went to the spot he was standing when I shot him and then looked back to the stand and my heart sunk as I saw many toothpick sized twigs and limbs that were about vital-high on the buck. I will shoot through &quot;holes&quot; also but if I had to do it all again I wouldn't have taken this shot through that junk. Davidmil...I will lend you some of my venison if you need some to get you through the winter. I'd hate to hear that you starved to death. lol. Just kidding... I think you've single-handedly put the population of the herd under control in your area.

I REALLY know why I missed. She was TOO BIG. I'm used to aiming at smaller targets.
