Fuel line hose for climbing stand cables?
Playing around with a stand I picked up recently that uses a cable similiar to what Summit uses. Why couldn't fuel line hose be used to replace shrink tubing or the coating on a cable? Seems to me it would last longer, be quiet, grip well and its cheap. Just picked up 2' of 3/8" ID hose for $2.76. I split the cable down the middle and placed it around the cable. It fits well and looks good, only thing I haven't decided what to use to clamp iton. Auto screw on clamps(painted black), or possibly some sort of rubber cement to glue the seam together, etc. Anyone try this?

RE: Fuel line hose for climbing stand cables?
I've never tried it, actually, never thought of it. Neat idea. Ideally, you wouldn't want a seam at all. There's no way, I don't think, if there's a cut seam that's not "welded" back together it's ever gonna stay on there. Those babies take some wicked abuse, and I'm quite confident it would fall right off. Maybe some kind of glue.....JB weld perhaps to glue that seam together??
I would think it would be best to get tubing the chains will fit in, and just pull them through....with the help of some Dawn dishsoap or something similar..... |
RE: Fuel line hose for climbing stand cables?
Though I'm not sure, I don't think the fuel line hosewill work well. The cable will probably slop inside the hose or the hose mightroll against the tree with the cable inside it. This could potentiallyposea danger ifthehose decides to roll as you are climbing.I can also see the hose peeling itself off the cable eventually. But like I said, I'm not sure about this so the only way to know for sure is to try it out. I would first climb up and down the first 5 feet a couple times before ascending to height as a precautionary step.
Also, JB weld isn't a good idea because it hardens and cracks with repeated pressure. I'd just get a handful of medium plastic zip ties and put one every 3 inches. |
