Greg, that link doesn't take me to his books. Maybe I am braindead tonight. I assume this is the book Greg is trying to direct you too.I have to say that I am really impressed with Hunting Trophy Whitetails in the Real World by Don Higgens that I am readingright now. Awesome book. I am 3/4 of the way through it and I would HIGHLY recommend it for any serious trophy whitetail hunter.

What the ??? Thanks for catching that HCH... Let me shoot Don an e-mail and see what's going on with his site. It was working up to a few days ago, because I just was on it.

Great suggestion guys, very good read. Also if you hunt the rockies at all for elk or mule deer then Backcountry Bowhunting is really good as well.

I second Backcountry Bowhunting. If you are primarilyhunting whitetail or doing any kind of treestand hunting for that matter you may want to look elsewhere - maybe some others canhelp youwith good suggestions for that style. If you are into do-it-yourself western hunts, though, you should definately check out Backcountry Bowhunting. It's a great resource for how to prepare for a hunt, what kind of gear will help you, etc...

Thanks for the suggestion on the "out-West" book, as I'll be going on my first elk hunt this August in Colorado. Sounds like it may be good prep material.

Well, my e-mail bounced back from Don this morning... I see why, because the domain name was @higginsoutdoors.com. I'll see if I've got any other contact info for him.

Riffer,

Welcome to bowhunting. Here are a couple of suggestions on books one should read when just beginning in the sport.

First and foremost you should pick up a book on the behavior of whitetail (assuming this is what you'll be hunting). Their are a couple of good reads by Dr. Charles Alsheimer. It will probably bore you, but you'll have better results while hunting if you know what the deer is doing and why.

Then, when your ready to hunt, read Tree Stand Hunting, by Paul Brunner. A great read and a must for any hunter, especially to begginners.

Then you should graduate into reading the Don Higgins book mentioned above. It's an unbelievable read and a way to hunt the whitetail like no other book I've ever seen. I couldn't have agreed with Mr. Higgins more and reccomend this book nearly everyday.
