I've never run into an MRE that didn't taste like freeze dried vomit. I'm definitely not a fan of them.
Mountain House freeze dried meals aren't bad though.

Are you sure you had a real military MRE? They taste better.....by FAR than any freeze dired anything out on the market today.
I will admit I have yet to taste any of the commercial MRE's out there, I have only had the military issue ones and they are not half bad, theyare a far....farcry from freeze dried.
I always have a few cases on hand and if kept in the correct climate will last 8+ years. I rotate through as I use them. I think I am on about 4 year old MRE's now and they are just as good as ever.
They come 12 meals to a case and two cases make up a complete menu. They range from burgers to veggie dishes and everything in between. You can find them on line for about $50-$65 per 12 meal case for the military issue.
They are the only thing I take with me when I'm out for the day or on a weekend hiking trip. A little heavy but I never hike for more than three nights so it keeps my pack weight within reason.
The best MRE for backcountry??????
Military issue MRE's all the way!
If it's good enough for our fighting men and women........it's good enough for me!

You haven't lived until you've lived on Korean War C rations for a 36 days in the Vietnam jungle. We'd have given up a lot for ANY LRRP ration. I got one word for you... Tabasco. It makes all things better. Does the military have C Rations anymore?????
