Here is a woodlot I hunt. Take a look and mark where you think the main trails are, bedding area and where you would setup. I bet he is pretty gets pretty close to how I have it setup.

We are looking for

Also, how old is the areas timber?

RE: Hey Buckeyebuckhtr

Wind is out if the SW most of the time, I like NW wind also.

North is straight up

North Field has Corn, South Field is CRP with Cloveron the east end, about 4 acres.

Across the river was Corn, but they express way is real close

Good questions!

Ok this was not planned, but I wanted to show how close you can get when you can read a map, and understand how deer move.

Buckeye gets an A

His Blue dots

North One I have Killed nice 8 point, my uncle about 15 bucks

Middle Dot I have owned for 22 years, and have killed 5 good bucks there, truly a great rut spot.

South I killed the heaviest 8 pointer on our farm close 230 LBFD

Red Dots

South is a great spot have shot a doe there, and some close calls. Just comes down to time, I do not hunt it enough.

North is great also, just not enough time, maybe next year.

Red east dot I killed the big 8 in 2004

Green East I killed the 10 in 2005

The bedding areas are spot on!!!

RE: Hey Buckeyebuckhtr

yea i know i should have let him update it now i gotta revise it again oh crap on the brighter side i will save some deer from what they didnt want to happen after the shot LOL JK JK:D hey Germ my stands would be good if you could conivence the wind to blow east and north east

buckeye 01-15-2007 08:45 PM

RE: Hey Buckeyebuckhtr

Oneshot...

Problem with that is with a North or east wind you would be having your scent blow onto and all over the lines you drew as the buck and does travel patterns.

Yes, but I love SW wind I use my boat to get in behind the deer. Before i had the boat I used to pray for those winds, LOL

I put in by the farm house to the north on the east side of the road.

RE: Hey Buckeyebuckhtr

did i fail Germ it looked pretty close to me except i didnt place stands for all winds

Oneshot7 01-15-2007 08:48 PM

RE: Hey Buckeyebuckhtr

yea i see that now a southwest wind would be good for most of them

Germ 01-15-2007 08:51 PM

RE: Hey Buckeyebuckhtr

Second thing to notice is not very big, so as soon as you get near the center the deer know you are there. Notice Buckeye stayed on the outside, I learned this the hardway.

You got a "C" for nice big lines,LOL

SE east, SW west blows everything back into the CRP field. I have a stand right near there.

Typo on my part. The E and W are right next to each other :D I saw where you had that field labled as CRP as well.

Just thought you were testing me;)

Right where your dot is where the 16 died this year. Go SouthWest down the tree line is where I shot him.

Anyone have a guess on the tree line in the middle farm running almost West to East on what it use to be?

Guys, please explain how you got all this from merely looking at an ariel view. I'm guessing that buckeye guessed the bedding areas right because they were just the densest parts of the forest? And how about travel patterns, how do you guys know just by looking at a picture?

Eager to learn. Thanks.

Question from us north of the border guys. Whats a crp field? Is that gov owned land that is maybe leased to farmers?

The only thing I could guess is a pasture fence line that grew into a hedge row.

Germ, you have any better (close up / different angles) photos of your 16 from this year?

No we own the land, and the MI DNR pays us to grow native grass. Once we plant it we can not do a damn thing with it.

I don't have the power of the sticky :D

It is a little hard to explain.... It is just from a lot of scouting and a lot of aerial map reading. After a while you can just put it together so to speak.

Germ,
How big an area in acres is this wood lot?
Are there oaks in the interior?

Germ 01-15-2007 09:48 PM

RE: Hey Buckeyebuckhtr

Nice work Grizz on the trails!!

Where you have the buck bead on the othr side of the river is real close. I can not hunt over there but I scout it from the street, and the point of the triangle is where i have seen a big buck .

Your other buck bed is where they cross the river.

Bedding area to the North needs to go west a tad, nice work ,B+ for you!!

There are oaks on the North and south side along the river about half way into the woods on the south side. About half the field on the north side.

There are very few oks in the middle, but there are 2-4.

20 acres of woods

Old Railroad!! I can see the bridge supports in the river from my boat.

buckeye, your 3 blue stands on the west....Which wind would you hunt those and why? I have my own idea, but believe you me I've been wrong before. Oh, and what would be your entry route?

Blue stands were keyedfor an east wind. The east wind would blow out over the corn field.I would access the area from the west along the edge of the corn fields.
