Why do you think he left?
The day was Nov.15, 2006, it was a cool morning in the mid 40's cloudy littlewind blowing out of the west. I was setting in a summit viper stand on the edge of a 4 year oldcutover, backed about 25 yards off the edge an about 25 feet up a red oak.Thecutover was borderd by a creek an some mature oaks an 40 acres of pines an cedars. The time was about 0830, Isaw some movement coming through the pines an cedars an a 3.5 to 4 year old buck stepped out an started eating some acorns at about 45 yards. He was a9 point about 18 inches wide, decent mass. I watched himfor about 15 minutes, he made a scrap an closed the distance to about 30 yards, still not offering a shot. He locked up an started looking to the west towards me, but not at me, his hair bristled up on his back. He then started acting nervous an tucked his tail an turn an ran back intothe thick cover.hint (bad timing)

RE: Why do you think he left?
I would guess he left because the area dominant buck showed up.

RE: Why do you think he left?
I think you cut a fart stinky enough to make the hair on his back stand up. I would run too.

It's that 6th sense they have!;)

RE: Why do you think he left?
You'll never know unless you can communicate with him. To say the wind and rain sent him running is pure conjecture. They live in the stuff. I'd say since the rain came from behind you and toward you and he left... he smelled you.

RE: Why do you think he left?
I guess I would have to communicate with himto find out for sure, but since I do not figure you have spoken to him, you will have to take my word.

RE: Why do you think he left?
Nah, I'll go with my theory. A wind shift got ya. You may not have noticed the wind change, but if the rain was coming and came that quickly from behind you, there were swirls or shifts. It dosn't do a complete turn around with the first rain drops. Sure they can hear, but something that far removed they'll usually hold tigher than a button until they figure it out.

I guess we will agree to disagreeDaniel Boone.

RE: Why do you think he left?
This may seem like a minor nit-picking point but he couldn't possibly have been 4y.o. in Nov. There's always going to be a 1/2 in the age in the fall .Oh yeah he winded you!

RE: Why do you think he left?
I stand strong on my original assumption. Cheese in the breeze.

ORIGINAL: davidmil You'll never know unless you can communicate with him. To say the wind and rain sent him running is pure conjecture. They live in the stuff. I'd say since the rain came from behind you and toward you and he left... he smelled you. Remember those summers when you were a kid? Hot summer day, then all of a sudden a cool breeze, then you can smell rain in the air. Happens often, since wind likes to blow out of a rainstorm, and into an area where there isnt rain (Isnt the saying wind blows from high to low pressure?). Hence, the reason you can smell the rain. That same wind carried your stench towards the buck, he smelled you, and bolted. Also, quite possible he smelled a dominant buck in the area, and bolted. Either way, the wind was the culprit! |
RE: Why do you think he left?
Why didn't you get down and stalk him?

RE: Why do you think he left?
I am hoping he will be back through next year, he will be bigger was not exactly what I wanted anyway. Thanks for the opinions an the weather lesson.

RE: Why do you think he left?
From what I have heard, when their hair stands up it is a strong sign that the dominant buck showed up. I doubt it is from scent.

RE: Why do you think he left?
Thank you,I have never seen a deer bristle the hair up on his back when he smells something he didnt like, I believe that more than I would think he smelled me. I had on scent lock an adoeshock that Ihad got about a week earlier off of a doe that was starting to show signs of going in rut hanging on a limb next to me.
