Determining Correct Milage On Maps

Does anyone on here know how to accurately convert curved and angled road lines into the correct milage in accordance with the maps scale. For example, if I want to pull the truck over on state land, how do I know I,m on satae land (thats unmarked) having only the map and my odometer for reference, when the map scale is illustrated in straight lines??????

RE: Determining Correct Milage On Maps

It depends on the map scale but usually it is an inch for every mile i believe. Anyway take some yarn or string and place it on top of the road with all the curves, then measure the string straight to see how far the curvy road was. Kinda hard to explain but I hope this helps.
