Work is Done!

I'm not sure what else I have to look forward to this year. Maybe a trip to Saskatchewan? I had my opportunity to shoot this buck at the end of December. He was at about 25-30 yards, but there was some brush in the way of the shot. Finally I decided to call it off, and waited for a better opportunity. The opportunity never presented itself and I finished my season without tagging this buck. But....I did find the sheds! Right shed scores about 73", the left shed is about 78". Inside spread is estimated to be around 18".

Both sheds as I found them.

Again, as I found them. I wanted to pick them up more than you can imagine.

The larger of the two. Around 78".

Great pics James, those antlers are a great find as well. Your a lucky man. It's nice that buck is as regular around your cam as he is, must be a local. Since you already had a close encounter with him, I think you'll get another opp again later!;)

That is the buck you sent me a pm about and i mentioned it would be nice to find his sheds, you did it man, he is a beauty. Heck im still getting pics of racked bucks around here and seeing plenty of them. Question-- did you start looking because the pic tipped you off that they had fallen and how many hours vested before you found them?
Dan

RE: Work is Done!

I found the sheds only about 50 yards from one of my cams. I wish they were all that easy. Long story short, I've been out of town a few days. I came back home on the 13th and checked my cam about 3:30 in the afternoon on my way back. I got home and saw the picture of the buck that had just recently shed his antlers on the 11th. I studied that picture for about an hour before coming to the conclusion it was the big one that I was after. The idea there was that I had to make sure it was the right buck because I did NOT want to take any chances of running that big buck out of the area. I came to the conclusion it was the deer I was after and went out right away this morning, the 14th. I walked for only about 5 minutes in a direction where atleast 75% of the deer come from and travel out of. After only 5 minutes I said to myself "what are you doing? The buck came from the other direction and you have the pictures to prove it". So I went back to where I believed he came from, according to the pictures and found the sheds almost immediately.

That is one NICE buck. He sure seems bigger in the picture. Not that he isn't already huge, and a lot bigger than any buck I have taken.

Good luck next year.

James,

Thats is just flat out cool! Awesome buck, great photos, I am so happy you found his sheds. Your pics say it all! great post. Love it... I hope you kill him this next year. I can relate; this year, I had a 20 yard shot on buck I have 1 shedfrom and have him on film. I had to let him walk due to lowlight. Anyway..good luck on your hawg...

Sounds like a movie.
See buck on camera.
Hunt buck and see him but no shot.
Find sheds of buck on camera.
Dream of one day meeting him again.

I hope you get to write your ending.

Dang James, awsome pics as usual and what a beast. Congrats on both getting the pics of him and gettin the sheds, no new Nov. I plan on having to congradulate you on shooting that bad boy!

That deer looks like he would score well into the 170's but from what your measurements state he would be a mid 160's. What are the measurements for the sheds?

James Vee 02-21-2007 05:51 PM

RE: Work is Done!

The shed measurements were @73 for the smaller side, and @78 for the larger side. Both sides are a typical 6 points. With an estimated 18" inside he would gross right around 170". The pictures threw me off. I had figured his beams would be anywhere from 26" to 28". But, once I found the sheds I realized that the beams were only 22". So instead of being a high 170's or gross 180" buck, he would just barely gross over 170". Still one heck of a buck. I also have a set from this same deer I believe from four years ago. I've been back to the same area every year, and finally in December of 2006 he showed himself once again.

Buck Magnet 02-21-2007 06:15 PM

RE: Work is Done!

I would have guessed the main beams longer than 22" but I guess thats why its impossible to get a accurate score from a pic, you can't see the subtle curves of the main beams which can really make or break a score. No matter what that buck scores, 150's, 160's, 170's, he is a brute and I wouldn't hesitate puttin an arrow through him.

On a side note, my buddy and I were discussing our "perfect buck" just last week and that pic is him. I told my buddy that my ideal buck would be a typical 6 point that doesn't have one defining characteristic (giant spread or huge tines or super massive) but he would be good all around and that buck is him, good mass, good tine length, good width, you can't ask for much more than that.
