RE: Heart or Lung shot (which is more ethical)
Is this a trick question....
They are both ethical, but it depends on the situation. If you have a clear, quartering away shot at the heart, go for it...it will be fatal. But if your shot isn't at a clear view to the heart, I would say the lungs. My and shoulder blades don't mix...I'll gladly take out both lungs. |
RE: Heart or Lung shot (which is more ethical)
I agree that the best spot to aim for is the center of the lungs because of greater room for error. That being said, a heart shot usually seems to put a deer down faster than the lungs only. Three of the five deer I took this year (including both bucks) had their hearts centered with my arrows. None went over 40 yards and death was very qucik. The biggest buck went 30 yards and fell over in sight. I aim for the lungs, but I'll take a heart shot if I'm confident I'll hit it.

Six of one, half a dozen of another.

RE: Heart or Lung shot (which is more ethical)
never lost a double lung or a heart shot deer. Either way I'm aiming for lungs if it's what I'm given.

RE: Heart or Lung shot (which is more ethical)
the double lung shot is the most ethical....by shooting the heart you cause the blood to constrict and flow away from the wound causing it to be a longer death..

RE: Heart or Lung shot (which is more ethical)
In my experience over dozens of deer shot with bow and gun .... a double lunger has dropped the deer in a shorter distance than heart only. In every case. Only with a double lung bow hit, have I hada deer jump a little and not even run away, but finish doing what it was doing until it dropped right there.

I shoot for the lungs on every shot i take , sometimes due to circumstances you may hit only one lung. You still should be able to find your deer most of the time if you don't push him.
