trukey with a bow
Im thinking of using my bow this spring for turkeys any pointers on what i need thats differnt then deer hunting and where should i aim thanks
|
RE: trukey with a bow
If i were going turkey hunting, which i may be doing this spring in WV, is get me some Gobbler Guillotines and aim for the neck/head.
|
RE: trukey with a bow
i thought u shoot them just above the leg
|
RE: trukey with a bow
I personally would get a large cutting diameter mechanical head. I would be okay to lower your draw weight to be able to hold it for a really long time.
I'm out on the gobbler guillotines, I think it can be disrespectful to deface any animal. |

RE: trukey with a bow
from the front shoot where the beard enters the chest. From the side shoot where the wing bone attaches to the body. From behind you shoot where the wing tips come together.

RE: trukey with a bow
right above the leg is a great spot for broadside. I like to take them facing too me or away if possible. I used a gobbler getter expandable on mine a couple of weeks ago. The guy that I was with killed his using an adder point behind a shuttle t-lock. It sounded like he hit the bird with a golf club as it did a face plant. Normal broadheads will pass right through. You need to impede penetration and add a little shock value. I know here in Idaho, the rules are loosened for any weapon seasons and we can drop the weight of the arrow down and also the poundage of the bow, this helps keep the arrow in the bird. Good luck, it is alot of fun.
dwd, I see that you are from Oaklahoma, the Sooner ,BSU game should be an interesting one to watch eh?? |

RE: trukey with a bow
Monster mechanicals and a double bull blind.
|
RE: trukey with a bow
I'll be using mechanicals and bowing DOWN from 71#'s to 64 or so. There's plenty of anatomy charts RE: turkeys to point you in the right direction. I think the mathews site has one as a sticky.

The Mathews Link is:
http://forums.mathewsinc.com/viewtopic.php?t=34266 I use mechanicals too for the same reasons already mentioned. I also use a pop-up blind because it's difficult to get drawn especially if there are multiple birds. It's nice to have a triangular chair with three legs - easier to get into shoot position. It's also nice to have a bow holder that sticks into the ground. I've also spot-n-stalked turkeys - not easy, but doable. Try to manouver ahead of them and catch them coming by. Again, not easy, but loads of fun. |
RE: trukey with a bow
I'm out on the gobbler guillotines, I think it can be disrespectful to deface any animal. A blind is great because you can sit with a buddy and get away with some movement. I range finder is also important because the vitals are small! I prefer mech. heads also, you need all the cut you can get! |
RE: trukey with a bow
get the tips that are like wire. and use a ground blound or make one i would suggest. good calls. and the rest is mainly for you to do
|
RE: trukey with a bow
i hunt turk's with a bow and would suggest good camo head to toe.....a small ground blind..not a full blind but the one that is like a little fence.....broadheads don't really matter in my opinion....they will all work...aim at wing or above the leg to avoid loosing breast meat and you should be fine

RE: trukey with a bow
YUP, get yourself a big cutting diameter mechanical or use some sort of turkey stopper. The mechanical gives you more room for error on a bird that doesn't ever seem to want to stand still.[&:] I got one of those collapsable bow blinds that screws in in place of your stabilizer. Mine is like this. It weighs the same as my stabilizer. Mine is green leafy.

RE: trukey with a bow
how can u practice with one of those gobbler guillotines? can u shoot it at a broadhead target or what?
|
RE: trukey with a bow
Can't tell ya unc. I think I saw the first one I've ever seen on Saturday. If I'm not mistaken.....it was $45????? Also....I hear ya have to shoot longer arrows than normal.
I'd wonder how you could POSSIBLY sight that thing in!!!.....lol Jeff Anyone know???? |
RE: trukey with a bow
yea i was wondering the exact same thing GMMAT
|
RE: trukey with a bow
I would think you'd need longer arrows to ensure the point was out past the riser.I think they're one size fits all as far as weight. If they're heavier than your normal head it could throw your spine off.

RE: trukey with a bow
If you are using a ground blind and shooting mechanicals, I suggest removing the mesh.
If you want to see a good clean kill. Watch the Fiesta bowl. Go Blue!! :0) |

RE: trukey with a bow
Definetly the Gobbler Gullitone and maybe hunt from a ground blind.
|
RE: trukey with a bow
Your arrows do have to be longer when using the guillotines. Enough so to clear your sights and/or your riser. You can't shoot them into any target without ruining the blades, maybe the pillow will work, we never tried that. I actually found that I was able to shoot them accurately out to about 20 yards or so without making any adjustments on my sights, and if the turkey didn't come in that close, I would simply use my regular arrows with my 100 gr. mech. head. We used double bull blinds with the netting pulled open to shoot through.
