Safety Harness....
I am looking to spend part of my Christmas bonus on a good safety harness. The one I currently use is old and probably more unsafe than anything. (whichnot to mention is a pain in thebutt and that prevents me from using it a lot of times) So what does everyone recommend for good safety harnesses. Here are some things to keep in mind.
1) I want something quick and easy and quiet 2) I hunt five different treestands Thanks everyone for you input. |
RE: Safety Harness....
Summit Seat O The Pants or Hunter Safety System. 2 of the very best.
|
RE: Safety Harness....
I use the Hunter Saftey System. Put it on like a vest and then latch the buckles. Very easy and quick.

RE: Safety Harness....
Summit seat o pants; awesome vest. Rear pocket carries prussic knot rope and vest comes with linesmans rings. Whatever you get, make sure it has a linesmans' setup too.

RE: Safety Harness....
I had the seat o the pants, and really don't care for it.I found the Loggy Bayou to be the best I have ever used.I have owned two different seat o pants, and a couple other brands, the loggy is in my opinion the best.I don't care for the vest's either. RE: Safety Harness....
Hunter safety system. Fast and easy to use.

RE: Safety Harness....
Having been suspended in harnesses for work related training, I would suggest you carefully look at the designs. I don't know if the Hunter Safety System design has changed, but their leg straps fastened in a manner that would pull straight up on your crotch, instead of outward to the side (in case you were suspended). That ain't worth saving a couple seconds putting it on for me.

RE: Safety Harness....
Anybody with enough sense to write........but not enough to wear a harness......can PM me and I'll send you one, for free. I have a couple extras.

RE: Safety Harness....
I got a Seat of the Pants vest for Christmas, VERY easy to put on, no playing "guess which hole your head and arms go through", put it on like a vest, attach leg straps and off you go. Has D rings on the hips to use as a climbing belt for hanging stands.
Pat on the bowsite a while back did a field test of several including the hunter safety system, just about castrated himself with it. Supposedly its been redesigned since then, but check first. I also, this year, started using a climbing rope system to be attached all the way up and down to/from my hang on stands. got it from a guy on archery talk, $30/setup. High quality climbing rope, stays attached above the stand and by the ground, sliding prussic knot you attach to to climb. I figure it slows me down by about 5-10 seconds per trip up/down the tree. Myself and family are now never off the ground without being connected. |
RE: Safety Harness....
My favorite one came free with a Big Game portable tree stand. Bought a few others brands and sent them back.
|
RE: Safety Harness....
I use the one that came with the Gorilla treestand. The ones that come with the really cheap stands are junk!
|
RE: Safety Harness....
I'm in the same boat. I bought a Summit Viper "Goliath" Model back in the fall of 2005, and have been using the safety harnes that came with the stand. They have sent me a "recall" on that harness, and sent me a brand new one, but I still don't care for that harness system. Looking at the vest system, but neevr tried one, how do you guys like them? Or do you prefer a Harness sytem?

RE: Safety Harness....
Hunter Safety system. Make sure you get the newer model with the seat belt type latches. Don't buy the mesh one. Not only does it cost $20 more but the mesh gets caught on tree bark. THe vest is easy to put on, stays out of your way and is secure with a break away tether that slows your fall if you take the big plunge. It has slash and small velcro pockets to hold things like range finder, grunt tube, The Can etc. I've had 3 different types and brands to include all mentioned above. The Hunters Safety System is the best.

RE: Safety Harness....
ORIGINAL: davidmil Hunter Safety system. The Hunters Safety System is the best. Put it on..4 buckles later..attach to tree andyour assafe as in your mommas arms. |
RE: Safety Harness....
Okay... I had a question along on the same subject. I'm used to wearing a saftey belt, rather than full harness. I can see the obvious reasons why the harness is overall consideredmore safe. But do they still have just a standard saftey belt, without the full harness, or is this something which is no longer allowed for the TMA standard? Thanks

RE: Safety Harness....
Hunter Safety System vest seems too bulky or heavy to me. I just use the harness that came with my Viper. I put it on under my camo and it only takes 30 seconds to put on. Use the rope and prussic system and up I go.

RE: Safety Harness....
GMMAT: The mesh still gets caught on little dimmples and pimples of bark that protrude from hardwoods. I thought I had to have one for warm weather hunting. I already had the material HSS. I gave my old one to my nephew. Now I have to live with the mesh getting snagged once in a while when you lean back against the tree. I hunt mostly hardwoods too. A cure, put it on under your outer shirt/jacket, but then you loose the convenience of the pockets. It's just a concern at times, the snagging. It has made noise at times too.

RE: Safety Harness....
Hunter Safety System, BUT I experimented by allowing my full weight to be suspended and the belts around each leg puts a huge strain on the groin area. I surely wouldn't want to be suspended for any long period of time in this position. Other than that it is very easy to put on and is very confortable.

RE: Safety Harness....
David:
If you're not happy.....I might buy it from you. I need to get one.....so I could get you a fabric one and trade (if yours isn't too worn). Your call. The only time I'd wear it on the outside.....is in the early season. Jeff |
RE: Safety Harness....
Mine shows wear even though it's only a couple years old. Got a couple tears in the mesh on the back where it got caught on bark. THe mesh also has faded badly on the back, the fabric one doesn't fade like that. My next one will be an all fabric.

RE: Safety Harness....
I hear ya. I think I'll try the mesh......mainly because of the heat factor.....and because it'll be under something else.
I appreciate the review, though. Jeff |
RE: Safety Harness....
GMATT, I use a prusic rope with mine. It was shipped with a strap. I think they're all shipped with a Prusic now, but if not, spend the 20 bucks and get one. They also make a linemans belt attachment. THe only problem I have with it is that it's hard to get hooked up with it. Len solved that problem(really before HSS came out with it. He told him what he did and they came out with it). Anyway, the linemans belt attaches with two big snap rings that you have to reach up under the outer layer and snap on. Tough to get hooked up under the mesh without getting hooked in the mesh. Len tied on a couple loops of good quality braided rope where they say to hook the linemans belt attachment. THey are about 4 inch loops he made that make it so much easier. The linemans belt is also a prusic rope. I think it was around $25 with all the snap rings etc. Where their method is so hard is once you're climbing a tree and have to unhook to go over a limb or something. The nice thing about it if you're afraid of heights, you can still hook up the HSS system with the tether and also hook up the linemans belt so you're hooked up at all times.

RE: Safety Harness....
Thanks, David. I use a caribiner??? Can I attach that to the end of the strap that comes with the vest? I then use my tether wrapped around the tree.....and slide it up as I go......down as I descend.
Jeff |
RE: Safety Harness....
When I said snap rings I really meant caribiner. It comes with two. It's just that you have to reach up between two layers of fabric, the outer layer and the lining, to get at the point that will support you best. You snap them in place without being able to see. Len just added the loops to hang down which makes it easier to attach your caribiner. I guess you could also cut a slit in the outer fabric to allow access.

RE: Safety Harness....
I am the same.. kshunter..
I only use a safety belt made by Ameristep. It does have a right and left chest strap as well as the belt. I don't even think they make them anymore so anytime I find one I buy it. I have 3 now. I just don't like wearing the full body harness but I realize they're a little safer. I just find them bulky or heavy, and uncomfortable to wear. But I never hunt without my belt..never! |

drstalker..
I actually own the new Loggy Bayou safety harness you are talking about. I bought it in early September before this season. Your correct.. it's not bulky or heavy at all which is why I liked it so much. I just never got around to trying it.. but I will next season for sure. |
