RE: Time to raise score to qualify for P&Y?
The Pope and Young Club is one of North America's leading bowhunting and conservation organizations. Founded in 1961 as a nonprofit scientific organization, the Club is patterned after the prestigious Boone and Crockett Club. The Club advocates and encourages responsible bowhunting by promoting quality, fair chase hunting, and sound conservation practices. Today it fosters and nourishes bowhunting excellence and acts in the best interest of our bowhunting heritage everywhere. The Club promotes and participates in improving sound wildlife conservation and wise use of our natural resources. Named in honor of pioneer bowhunters Dr. Saxton Pope and Arthur Young whose exploits during the early part of the 20th century drew national attention to this "forgotten" and challenging form of hunting, the Pope and Young Club began in 1957 as a part of the National Field Archery Association's Hunting Activities Committee out of a need to improve the image of bowhunting. Through its Records Program, the Club encourages quality bowhunting by awakening interest in outstanding examples of this continent's big game animals. The Club records for posterity scientific data on North American big game taken with bow and arrow. It conducts ongoing recording periods and every two years presents appropriate recognition to the finest specimens submitted. These biennial presentations honor the quality of individual examples of North American big game species and promote the ideals of fair chase. Through the Club's Conservation Program, members lead others to participate in protecting and promoting wildlife, wildlife conservation, and our bowhunting/outdoor heritage. This is the best I can do for you, but its still a matter of choice.
The Pope & Young Club is recognized as the official repository for records on bow-harvested North American big game. Together with the Boone & Crockett Club, the Pope and Young Club maintains the universally accepted scoring system and sets the standards for measuring and scoring big game. Statistical data collected from the scoring are added to the Club archives as part of the organization's ever-growing file on North American big game species. Record books, supplements, and statistical summary pamphlets are periodically published to update the compiled information. These publications are available to interested individuals, wildlife agencies, and conservation organizations. The P&Y Records Program archives provide great insight into the past and present management, health, and trends of North America's wildlife populations. The records are a testimonial to wildlife, traditional wildlife management, and the importance of hunting as a management tool. |
RE: Time to raise score to qualify for P&Y?
I do not feel any shame for giving my money to a club that I believe in. I buy memberships to a couple of clubs, WBA (Wis Bowhunters Assoc), P&Y and B&C. I entered one in B&C too, Modern day awards. These clubs have done and continue to do great things for our wildlife and sport. No shame in that. My way of contributing. I don't care what they do with my money. They seem to have it under control and they are very solid organizations.
On another note, I'm a numbers guy. I enjoy looking through the record books. I like to see where all the big bucks are coming from and what sizes they are coming in. I purshased a B&C and P&Y record book in 1992, I'm thinking about getting another set. I find them enjoyable. I check out the Wis. Buck & Bear record book once in a while too. They break it down by county. |

It appears to me that the records program and conservation program do not overlap. |

RE: Time to raise score to qualify for P&Y?
So does the $25 you give them for an entry go towards conservation in any way or does it simply cover the costs of producing the books? |
