RE: POST YOUR BEAR PICS HERE

I've only ever taken one bear and fortunately it was with my bow, it's the only way I wanted to hunt bears so I made the trip to Quebec and hunted with Turnpike Ridge Outfitters out of Maine. I've never hunted Bears in PA. There is a 3 day season the Mon-Wed before thanksgiving here in PA. Guys have hunted their whole lives and never seen a bear. I've been fortunate enough to usually see at least one bear during archery season but of course, they are off limits. This year for the first time they offered an archery hunt but again, I didn't buy a tag, I didn't have the time off nor was it something I was interested in. I think I have my one and only bear unless I go on a group hunt with some great friends. Anyway, I digress, back to the hunt:

I made the trip to Quebec with my Mom's "friend" Tim, now her husband. The accomodations were excellent and I learned that each stand site is set for one hunter only, there are 3 sites per hunter. I was taken out to my stand on Sunday (no hunting) and shown where to go. We didn't hunt mornings so it was actually nice to sleep in, meet the other hunters and do a little shooting. I did have a "debate" with an old school hunter in camp. An elderely man that was so anti carbon arrows it was unbelievable. I was shooting my then Hoyt Tenacity II, Beman ICS 340's with 100 gr Muzzy. He thought my setup was too light but I informed him of the KE at which this setup produced. He just wouldn't hear of it. Even when shooting side by side and my arrow zipped through the target and his arched and stuck out of the target. Oh well I said, we'll see how it does on a bear.

The hunt, the evening I was taking out and dropped off. I had a bout a mile walk back to my stand and it became humbling, I was aware I was the only human being within a 5 mile of myself armed with a bow, a knife and my wits, non of which were very sharp...lol

I snuck/stalked my stand location and there was already evidence there was bear there before I arrived. It was thick too, that made me nervous as I approached. I crawled up in the stand and waited. I didn't see a bear that night. I heard one approach only to wiff and run. I don't know if it saw me, heard me or smelled me. I did however get pounded by black flies. My forehead looked like a pin cushion. As it grew dark I knew I had a mile walk back out so I left early enough to see, again, nervously. This PA whitetail hunter wasn't used to this.

The second night in the stand happend quickly. I was in the stand at 3:00. At 3:30 I see movement. Now this PA Whitetail hunter is sitting in a tree deep into Quebec. As the black materializes I said out loud to myself, "What the hell is that?" and of course the reality that I am bear hunting jolted me back to reality. He came in very cautious, more cautious than I've seen PA bears wonder by. I accidently made a noise with my sight and he looked my way. I had my video camera on a tree pod but was afraid to turn it on, my nerves were getting the best of me.

I came to full draw and sent my arrow through the bear. He was all but broadside, slightly quarted to, I know but more broadside than you think and I had no doubt I'd catch both lungs. The bear tore out of there and all went quiet. Suddenly I heard what they refer to as the "death moan"...I didn't need to hear that. It saddened my heart. I assumed the guide was going to check on us periodically as far as the drop off spot so I walked out. He never showed until just before dark. Had I known that I could have stayed in the stand and seen what else showed up and perhaps taken some video.

The guide and I went back in and and found the blood trail at the impact site. It was a very good trail right to my bear that layed not 60 yards away. We took it out on a stretcher and atv back to the truck. We picked up the other 2 hunters that were 5 miles apart. A second bear was taken that night and a 3rd hit that we all decided to track in the morning. We didn't find him saddely and I really liked the ethics of this guy. He hit a bear on Monday and then Tuesday. He said he was done. The guide wanted to put him back out but he said no, he was done. The guide did his job, he failed his own so he was done with 5 days of hunting left he decided to relax.

When skinning and cleaning my bear the broadhead took both lungs, liver and smashed the femur. I called the "old timer" over to witness good KE and he just smiled and shook my hand. 6 of 8 guys took bear, 2 with a bow, 4 with a rifle. The 7th guy was the guy that hit two, the 8th guy was the old timer. The guide made light that this guy wouldn't be able to take a bear if it was tied. He said he was finding Hall's cough drop papers and candy papers under the stand. I don't know what he was doing out there but he didn't get a bear.

I'd recommend Turnpike Ridge Outfitters to anyone with confidence.

Nice bear Rob!! How much did that hog weigh? I live for the adrenaline rush that comes with taking a bear with a bow. I have taken 6 with archery gear. I don'thunt forthem specifically, they are a target of opportunity for me. I hunt a hardwood ridge that has plenty of beech nuts and it adjoins an apple orchard. It never ceases to amaze me how stealthy a critter of that size can be.

I took a bear with my bow in Maine several yrs ago. Double lung and went 40 yds, and like Rob, mine let out 3 death moans which would make your knees knock. The pic is not scanned to my puter but I'll post a pic I took a couple yrs ago.

Here is a picture of my first bear. I was suppose to get drawn this year to hunt black bear in Wisconsin after 6 years of applying for preference points. BUT a wedding, two honeymoons, and moving to Iowa (means I have to by an out of state) laterI was forced to apply for just another preference point this year and waituntil next year.:(

Needless to say, I can't wait to go. I didn't think it would be as expensive. But by the time I buy a non resident tag, pay for a guide/baiter, food/lodgeing, and hopefully a bear mount....I'm looking at between $1,500 and $2,000. Damn

Rob- to this day I can hear those moans, so human like it scared the beegeezus outta me, and I don't scare easily after 41 yrsof carrying a bow around. Reminds me of the time at dark one night hunting when a screech owl let off a scream. For a week I had to use brylcream to keep my hair down.

Here is my bear from 2003, he was a little guy, only120 pounds. He only gave one death moan. Sorry about the pic, this was the next morning on the way to the butcher, its the only one I have here at work.

The death moan will make the hair stand on end. This last spring, the boar I killed let out 5-6 and it echoed through the canyon I was baiting. I will never forget that noise.

Here is 2006, it is on the opposite side of the color spectrum, This one was real blonde. I shot this one standing up facing me at 12 yards. I hunt bears from a ground blind. It can get real fun at times.

Nice looking bear John Deer. What did the skull measure at???

Elkcrazy8, he squared a little over 6 feet. His skull measured 19.75. There are some unbelievable bears up there. I'm headed back the first week of May '07.

That is a good bear. Congrats to you. Our bears here in Idaho are smaller, but we have some great color phase to them. The pure black one in the pic measured at just over 17 inches, but is impressive because it was an old sow. Her teeth were worn down to nothing. I probably did her a favor.

RE: POST YOUR BEAR PICS HERE

It was on an un-guided combination black/brown bear hunt out of Cordova in May 2002. Black bear hunting had been slow due to a late spring. My friend Rex had taken a nice 6’ black bear on the evening of the third day with his .300 Win Mag. A-bolt. However, we were seeing less black bear and more brown bear than we usually saw in this area at this time of year. Rex and Russ were off hunting from the skiff so I was solo hunting black bear on the second to last day of our hunt. When I spotted the bruin, he was moving down the beach toward me with the wind at his back. I stepped up into the cover at the edge of the trees and waited as he walked by at 17yds. He stopped to look when he saw me draw back, covering the vitals with his shoulder blade. He obviously couldn’t make me out in my camoflage, or smell me. When he turned and had gone past me I took the shot. The arrow passed clean through entering between the third and forth rib and coming out through the left tricep. He roared and bit at the arrow as it came out. Then he ambled back up the beach the way he had come. I sat and waited for about half an hour and went to round up the guys and bring the rifles back to look for him. The arrow had caught both lungs and cut three chambers of the heart. He went about 80yds and dropped. We skinned him at the edge of the water and dropped him in the skiff for the ride back to camp. I was fortunate enough to harvest a nice 8' boar with a beautiful coat. The skull green scored 24" and netted 23 and change placing it well into P&Y. The bow is a Hoyt UltraTec set at 70lbs. shooting a 29" A/C/C 3-60 with a 125gr. 3 blade Muzzy at about 260fps. I shoot it with a string-loop and Carter release.

Kodiak, that's one beautiful bear. Congratulations on taking him with the bow!! Very impressive. Some day I'd like to go on a kodiak hunt. Do you know if a resident can take a nonresident brown bear hunting in Alaska? I know if you're a nonresident you must be guided, but I was wondering if the guide must have his/her guide license or if it can be any resident of the state of Alaska that has lived there for 2+ years. Just something that I had heard and wondered if you knew.

KodiakArcher 12-21-2006 06:30 PM

RE: POST YOUR BEAR PICS HERE

As a non-resident you must have a guide to hunt brown bear, sheep, goats and I think musk ox. The guide must either be a registered guide or a resident relative of no more than second degree of kindred (in-law, cousin or closer). To be a resident you must have maintained a residence in the state for at least 12 months (and I think you have to be physically present for at least 9 of those 12 months and plan to stay indefinitely?).

RE: POST YOUR BEAR PICS HERE

Hey! I haven't posted on these forums for a while but decided it was time to start checking 'em out again. I went on a black bear hunt in Canadalast yearI've been dreaming about this hunt since my dad first went there two years ago. I live in the Chicago area and the outfitter, WFO Bear Hunts is located 60 miles N of Thunder Bay, so it was quite a drive, but I didn't really care.I was PUMPED.
We arrived at camp at around 2 or 3 so all we had time for was to change and get onto the stand. We brought both our rifles and bows. That night we decided to take the rifles, even though I wanted to take a bear with a bow.The weather was miserable, around 50 and rainy the whole time. Nothing came out. The following night I went out with my bow on what was supposed to be a "guaranteed" stand. Yeah right! I sat on that stand for three nights and saw diddly squat. The end of our hunt was drawing nearer so I was getting anxious to shoot one. Everyone else at camp had at least seen a bear. I was getting frustrated. I was sitting perfectly still every night, watched my scent, did everything right but nothing. Finally the fifth night, my persistance paid off.
I decided to switch stands that night. I was dropped off at my stand by a hunter from camp, Dave,at around 4 PM. I sat along the pipeline, which runs through all of Canada. It was pretty cold and windy. I sat there for 4 hours and figured that this night would end up like all of the others. At 8:10 i look under my stand and I see this big black blob. I'm just like Oh crap! My heart started racing. I was about 10 ft from this beast. After what seemed like an eternity, the bear started moving. He strolled around for about 10 min and finally approached the bait and quickly turned around. He never really offered me a shot. He came back and offered me that perfect broadside shot at about 15 yards. The bear charged off into the woods and Iwatched himas far as I could. After I hit the bear, I started shaking from the adrenaline and the cold but boy was I excited. I cautiously got off my stand after singing to scare off any bears LOL. I couldn't standwaiting to look for any signs of a hit. I couldn't see any signs of blood at the place where the bear was hit, but I wasn't too concerned. I got up on the stand again to wait for the hunter to pick me up as I wanted to avoid becoming bear bait. He finally arrived. We decided to wait for my dad and another hunter, Scott, who had a tracking dog.We found him shortly. The whole trip was sweet.

Mine isn't a bow kill but I thought I would share anyway. I wanted to get one under my belt with a gun first and then try to stick one with the bow. I took this guy in ME this fall, 302lbs boar shot with my S&W .44 mag pictured. I shot himfrom about 3 yards, I wish I would have taken him with my bow. My next one will be with bow.
