Bad Breath

I have a question to ask all of you in this day of scent control technology. Do any of you do anything special with your breath when you go out into the woods, & if so what do you do or use? Is using a breath freshener a bad idea when your going out to hunt, is it better just to go out with morning breath? We do so much to control every other aspect of our scent, but have never heard any ideas for this.

if you are that worried about it, brush your teeth with baking powder (arm&hammer)

I tried that, but it makes me SO thirsty, I stopped - just use good 'ol Crest tootpaste with no problems

Brush your teeth as normal...

Then put 1 TABLESPOON of baking powder in your mouth some water & swish around until you can't stand it anymore. Spit & rinse lightly.

I also use a scent control hood.

Had 7 deer go downwind (oops) of me this Sunday & not a single one had a negative scent reaction. 1 saw me a stamped her feet to get me to move, but I satyed still & she kind of shrugged it off.

Thanks for the suggestions, I guess I'll try baking soda since they don't make a "fresh earth flavored gum".

Just KiddingArm and Hammer makes a baking soda and peroxide toothpaste that you can get readily at the grocery or drugstore. That's what I use and never had any issues.

And when you're done with all that stuff and your mouth taste like doo doo.... EAT an APPLE.

OR.... you're far enough north that there should be lots of wintergreen berries around. If you can't find some berries on your way to the stand the leaves do just as well. Chew some berries and munch some leaves. As far as the deer Poop goes......... ahhhhhhhhh.... I'll pass.

I always thought this was an easy one, keep your mouth shut. It really sounds good compared to some of these alternatives. With a good scent lock hood you should be fine.

If you really have bad breath, see your dentist. You may have another problem and eating jerkey is tough without teeth. I too have wonder about this question. I use all the shower and body stuff along with some spray and the suit. All in all, I'd have to agree with most of the posts advice. But I always have a pinch of Skoal in my lip when I'm in my tree and just keep my mouth shut. Everyone gets winded from time to time but I seldom get busted and think it is mostly due to paying attention to the days wind and never spit!

A friend of mine shoots deer all the time, he will sit and eat Slim Jims, drink coffee and whatever else he wants, he does not wear a scent blocker suit on his body or face, He has no problems shooting deer, but he hunts high, always 20 feet in the early season and as high as 30 to 35 feet in the late season. His breathe is horrible, hot garbage has nothing on this guy, it smells as if something crawled out of his rear, up to his mouth and died, then came back to life long enough to fart. Just hunt High.

Use listerine before you go out. If nothing else it is so strong you can stun the deer just by blowing in thier face.

I started carrying an apple to the woods with me and eating it before I walked into my stand and I believe it has made a big difference.

Peanut butter sandwich!!! MN DNR did a test, and found peanut butter to be the #1 deer attractant!!!!!

Just a quick comment on this. I brush my teeth with whatever toothpaste but I allways chew snuff in the stand and spit directly on the ground. I used to be hardcore and sit like a statue and never, never spit. Well one day I realized that I wasnt enjoying myself anymore so I quit all of that and began to relax a little in the stand. Dont get me wrong I still hunt well and any noise or even feeling will put me in statue mode. There have been times when I wonder if it may effect the deer but at least twice a year the deer tell me that it dont matter. As a mater of fact I hunted the hill country last week and had two does under my stand sniffing and licking the spit off the ground. Deer do not associate that smell with humans. Remember they smell strange and interesting things everyday in the woods and they are naturally curious. Anyway, my advice is cover scent. Snuff, Apple candy, etc..

What I normally do before each hunt is brush my teeth with baking soda, eat an apple and a peanut butter sandwich, gargle with listerine and tinks #69, chew on a few pine cones and then get a big dip ol dip of Timberwolf longcut wintergreen. IT REALLY WORKS.
