Emu

Had about three hours to decide if I wanted to take and Emu yesterday. Saw it again this morning. Anyone know where to stick a Emu to take it down fast. I'd bet it would disappear into the underbrush in a matter of seconds. Looks just like the natural ground colors in the Texas hill country!

A bunch of years ago some slick talkers conned a bunch of ranchers that Emu eggs and meat were going to compete with the beef market. Turns out that never happened but there were a lot of Emus on the ground. The cost of feeding the birds was getting to be a problem and most were turned loose. I have seen them at the 777 Ranch and have eaten the meat. You know how everything weird tastes like chicken? Well, Emu tastes like ribeye or T-bone. Red meat!

My concern is that it may run like the wind into some of the toughest tracking thicket a man could enter and I'd never find it. It has LOTS of feathers so the actual body mass is disguised. I'd rather not stick it in a meat zone either. Maybe someone from Australia will have some idea. My lease is bow only so a good old fashion shotgun blast is out.

The best way I know to take down and emu is with a machette.
They are very inquisitive (sp) birds but if spooked can run about 40mph and will be gone in no time.

What we used to do back home is lay on your back when you see one and start kicking your legs in the air they will come over to have a look.
They just cant help themselves then when it lowers its head strike with the machette.

Other than that you can aim for the small wings that should get you through the vitals.

Aussie by birth Texan by choice

Good one True! That would be a ride! might even make Outdoor Adventures TV show! HA!HA!HA!HA!
No really, I have no idea, but if they are an upstanding bird, would their kill zone be similar to that of a turkey? IE, right through the lower wing? I don't know for sure, just a thought.

KEEP IT LEGAL. KEEP IT SAFE. OR WE MAY NOT GET TO KEEP IT AT ALL.
