Is there such a thing a beginers BAD luck
This is my first year hunting with a compound. I have hunted EVERY weekend since Oct. 5th. I have had approximently(sp?) 10 deer in range but all of them have been running with does or chasing a smaller buck. I couldnt get any of them to stop except one doe and I missed a 16 yard broadside shot. I am having a blast, dont get me wrong, but I am getting a bit frusterated. I have fresh tracks all around my stand and rubs scattered about. I know the deer are there but it seems that every time that I am in stand or in my blind that they go everywhere else but by me. I call and have tried light rattling. Nothing has worked for me yet, I am going out this upcoming Sat. and Sun. with my bow but then Mon. is shotgun opener. I still have till Jan. to kill one with my bow so I aint worried yet but just frusterated.
Well yall thanks for letting me rant and vent:) "A Country Boy Can Survive" </IMG> |

Hang in there. It takes practice and a bit of luck. For example, in Missouri, 83% of bowhunters do NOT kill a deer every year and that's pretty much nationwide. If they're running around, try whissling a bit... a brief 'weird' noise may be just enough to make them stop and try to find out what's making such noise... I 'mooooo' a deer last year... She stopped and she's also in my freezer as well!

Its amazing how many things can go wrong bowhunting. Everything needs to go right to be successful! Thats why I think every deer taken with a bow is a trophy!
You sound like your hunting in the same stand all the time. Mix it up alittle. If your not getting shot opportunities move. The tracks by your stand could all be from at night. The deer may have your spot figured out. Sometimes my best stand spots are areas that really wouldn't be my first choice, but for whatever reason they give shot opportunities! PRACTICE....PRACTICE....PRACTICE......SUCCESS! |

And if every thunderstorm created a tornado, we'd all be dead. Cloud9 is right. There are a LOT of variables that go into our sport. Luck being one of them. I've bowhunted for 2 years on my own farm 3 or 4 times a week with multiple deer out every trip, all for 2 shots in 2 years. Only to find out that the bow I bought used is JUNK! I still have yet to kill a deer with a bow, but I love it! And I will buy a brand new bow this spring for next year and practice all summer long (no golf again!) to be ready for next season. Like one member says in their signature. "It's not the size of the kill, but the thrill of the hunt". Patience my friend.

Hang in there it took me 3 yrs. I got my first 11/20/02. It is a blast and you will get that first one just hang in there. Are you doing everything possible to control your scent? Changing your stand site, even if it is moving just a few yards? It might help.

I think I've read that here in Southwestern Ontario 1 out of 10 archers will successfully fill their tags during the Archery season!

RE: Is there such a thing a beginers BAD luck
I have 35+ years of deer hunting under my belt and have killed a lot of deer, I just got my first bowkill this year after 3 seasons with a bow, every skill I learned gun hunting had to be taken to the nth degree and even then there is still a degree of luck in regards to getting the proper angle for a clean kill with a bow that you will never have control of, in the three seasons bow hunting I have had a bunch of deer within range, but only 3 that presented an ethical shot, one I missed my anchor point and sailed it over her back, one was a fawn I let walk, the third was the winner! Be patient and enjoy and learn every trip you take, your day will come.

Some of you mentioned moving around and trying different stands. I havent hunted the same stand much more than 4-5 times this year. I use my blind if I cant use a climber and I have 4 stands that I can use. All of the places have fresh tracks and I'm sure that they go through at night.
I think scent came up, yes I use all precautions. I use the scent washes and the sprays. There is a swamp close by and some of the deer go to the swamp so I use a swamp cover scent. I take a shower with that scent controle body soap and shampoo. I am very cautious with my scent. I just gotta stick with it and keep moving around and trying new spots I guess. Hey Deerhuntr107,
I hear you and understand where you're coming from. I am a "newbie" myself and have been out EVERY STINKING SATURDAY only to come home empty handed. Yes, it is frustrating. I put my bow away, grabbed some waders, some steel shot, and am now duck/goose hunting. Maybe I'll have better luck with that. Butch ![]() |

Dude, I'm in a 4 year string of bowhunting bad luck. I have yet to get one with it.
