dan interesting story and outcome, what was the low down on the lower jaw, damage or just serious over-bite, really did not appear to be affecting his nutrition level or eating
I was in Saskatchewan when he was shot so I never got to see him up close myself. But my brother said it was just a serious overbite.

GREAT POST DAN!

This backs up my general (laughing) impressions of "Cull" deer.

Genetics is not the only thing that effects antler development - nutrition and health are key.
So unless a deer is kept in captivity and monitored often, how could somebody call a deer out on bad genetics and decide to cull him??? A bee sting early in antler development could cause poor or defective looking racks. A poor crop, tough winter, stress, accident, coyote incident, or countless other variables and combinations could account for poor antler development. And like your picture proves, next year he could have a crown!

I guess this was the point of this thread.

I should also note that, according to my brother, this deer had no other visible injuries that would have caused him to grow like that this year.

It was also estimated that the deer was 5.5-6.5 yrs old.

I would have shot him right off. He belongs to the species of deer known as the Dork deer. Very prominate feature is the over bite. Very rare find, and quite a trophy. They are considered direct decendents of the famouse Dork fish.
