Way to go, free country post what you want. I don't think it's pointless. I'm real shocked how many people don't think hunting is a sport. I still say yes. Many have made some great points but that's my story and I'm stickin' to it. Amen to everyone who is a sportsman/sportswomen. :D

They have a young hunter forum for guys your age, maybe you'd get even more pages of responses over there. Do you think that 5 pages is a lot? LOL You get my point. It wouldn't surprise me if your next poll was "Boxers or Briefs"[:-]

Nope. Just because it iscan be challengingdoes not make it a sport. How many people think chess is a sport?

Sometimes requires athletic ability/exertion, but so does chopping firewood, changing tires,or roofing a house. Sports??

Anything can be called 'competitive' if you word it right, but that doesn't make it a sport.

From dictionary.com:

Sports: Noun;Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
I would vote yes.

NO IT DOESN'T! You can hunt and be a total clutz. You can just decide today I'm going hunting. I have a license. I'm not going to kill anyone. I want to take a walk and see if I can "KILL" something. I'm not going out to harvest a management buck or kill a Pope and Young Buck. All I need is the license and to meet the requirements of my state... and then I can go hunting. You don't have to make it your life's work. You want to hunt. Go do it. It's not hard at all. It's just like fishing. Novices do it every day. And guess what, novices have fun EVERYDAY when they're in the woods. That's hunting. Some are more successful than others. Some have better land than others. The guy with the worst piece of ground on earth can still have fun if you let him.
I think the same thing can be said for a lot of things. "You can play football and be a total klutz. You can just decide today im going to play football. I have a football. Im not going to disturb anyone. I'm gonna go outside and see if I can catch a football. I'm not going to be the next hall of famer. All I need is a football and be able to catch it. You dont need to make it your lifes work. etc. etc." I think you get the point. Just because something might be easy to do, doesnt make it a sport.

It's sporting. Most sports that have two adversaries, both teams know the rules, when the game starts/ends, what they are competing for, etc. I guess hunting is a sport, but it is a sport where one team doesn't really know they are playing for a while, if at all. It is a battle between two adversaries only they are battling for different things, one isplaying for a trophy(whateverthe individual considers a trophy) andone of is playing for their life.

"I" just always assume sports are played by athletes.

But...if it's more of what's been described here......and even marbles fits that billing....I'll concede.

Sport it is!

Lets see now....

- It's often referred to as an outdoor sport
- It's sometimes referred to as a blood sport
- Avid hunters are often called sportsmen.
- Hunters buy their equipment in sporting goods stores.
- A popular hunters magazine is called Sports Afield.
- A popular tv show that often features hunting is The American Sportsman.
-What we do iscalledsport hunting to differentiate it from commercial hunting.

It's a sport. There is absolutely no question about it!

I think it depends on the person?
Dependsfor what reason there hunting?
Many yrs ago when folks had to survive using a bow i don`t think they called it a sport then?
But todays bowhuntinghas changed.
For many it`s nothing more than a challenge!a "sport" .. For others its not a sport at all? It becomes something different much more than a sport, or a hobby, itsway of life anda deeppassion.
Like i sead just depends on thehunter?(imo)

I think I would call it a recreational activity! Fun as heck activity!

RE: is hunting a sport?

It's always been considered a sport, why change it now? Webster's definesSport as: A particular activity as (hunting or an athletic game) Sporting is defined as: Bred or trained for use in Hunting (a sporting dog) But in my Dad's case, I think thats what he had in mind!!

RE: is hunting a sport?

I voted no. They way some of you describe sport, you could call anythinga sport. Hell walking could be defined as a sport by some of you. Is war a sport? I am sure some of you might think so.Hunting is a recreational activity, but not a sport. If you wanted to walk around punching people in the face for no reason you could call it boxing. But most sports have "people" that compete against one another. Where there is a winner and a loser, and there are rules that each competitor must adhere to. This doesn't describe hunting to me.

SOME SPORTS ARE CALLED WORK, DOES THAT MATTER? IT'S A WORD, WORDS DESCRIBE THINGS, DOES SPORT DESCRIBE HUNTING? YES, DOES SPORT DESCRIBE WORK? YES. IS HUNTING WORK? I THINK SO, ENJOYABLE WORK.

Then Putting on a jacket is considered a sport as well.........after all it is called asportscoat.

By it's definition it's a sport I'll agree to that but please don't anyone try to lump it into the same category asa"sport"that most have come to understandand identify as something TOTALLY different all together. They may share the same word but areway different.

I think hunting it's lumped into the "sports" category (like alot of other activities that don't belong there) becausethere really is no other description for the activity.

RE: is hunting a sport?

While some people may consider it a sport, it is absolutely a way of life for me.

Twelve months out of the year are consumed with either preparing for hunting or actually being in the field hunting. The majority of my extra money goes to the things that support this way of life.

I skipped sports in high school because I enjoyed hunting too much and sports would have interfered with my time in the woods. It was all about priorities and my priority was spending as much time in the woods or on the water as I could.

Can it be considered a sport? Sure.

Do I consider it a sport? No. I consider it my way of life. It consumes me, it sustains me, it is who I am and who I always will be.
