Seated or Standing?

A friend and I got intoa discussion about taking a shot seated or standing while in a climber. In the past Ihave made it a point to ease my self up to a standing position before the deer see me (most of the time). I know there are some times wherethe deer will surprise you (being so close)but I have always found a way to slowly stand up everytime.Everytime I have taken a shot while in a climber, it was from a standing position. I know I could more than likely make a shot while seated but I prefer to be standing. Just wondering ifother people prefer totake seated or standing shots. Thanks.

RE: Seated or Standing?

In my climbers it seems that the top part of the stand would be in the way for a seated shot so I stand up,like you do, before the deer get to me.
In my ladder stand or hang on stands I can shoot standing or sitting but prefer standing.

Standing....I practice standing and am standing 95% of the time in my treestand so I can see in all directions and blend a little better with the trunk of the tree.

I prefer to stand, but if I can't I'll take a seated shot...only if the deer is on my left side or slightly behind and to the left. To shoot seated in front of or to my right would involve more movement than standing would.

I always stand up as well i feel more comfortable with the shot . The bar kind of gets in the way when sitting . I do like you and just ease my self up when they are not looking

I usually try to sit, unless it comes in on my right(right handed). If I stand my dang legs shake so bad I cant even hit the ground much less a deer. So even when I do stand I have wedge my leg up against the seat or tree.

What teejay said goes for me allso , If I have time Ill stand or if the deer is comeing in from my right , otherwise I sit as stiil as possable untill its time to draw . In the last 2 years both bucks I shot came within 20 yards , and I shot them seated . This year my buck came in from the right but was ontop of me before I could stand , he came to a scrape at 5 yards , I had to draw and contort to the right from a seated position , perfect shot ,but not advisable for longer shots .

I've shot all my deer, this year, out of my climber. It's got a rail....so I'd risk my bow limbs hitting the rail if I took a seated shot.

In my lock-ons, though....I wouldn't hesitate to shoot, seated.

Depends on if I am sitting or standing when the deer walk by.
I would say that the majority of my shots have been while sitting. My climber, ladders and hang-on do not have shooting bars so nothing interferes with a shot while sitting.

RE: Seated or Standing?

As I like to stand in the tree stand (I can see in all directions a bit easier if standing), I find myself shooting standing up more often. However, I can shoot in a variety of positions including sitting and kneeling. So if I had to I'd take a seated shot.

I can't use climbers, just lock-on stands, but I always shoot sitting. I stood the first couple of times, but didn't like the noise I made. I tried drawing and aiming my bow sitting and it seemed workable, so I tried a shot and it worked. I've killed my last 20 or so that way. Sometimes I hang my right leg off the side of the stand to make it easier.

Altough I don't use a climber , I can take a shot seated and standing it doesn't really matter to me.
If I see the deer coming in and I have time enough to stand then I'll get ready for a standing shot but if the deer are within twenty yards or closer then I'll remain seated and get ready to draw.
Practice is the key to making good shots seated or standing just remember to bend from your waste to get the right angel.

I stand immediately when I see a deer, specifically when I intend to shoot.

I've gotten busted enough times during both sweet spots of the day to learn my lesson for a liftetime. I stand up for the first and last 45 minutes of light.

happy hunting

I always shoot standing. I don't think I would be able to do it seated because of the front bar, although I have never tried. I just feel alot more comfortable taking a standing shot, although I do practice a good bit from a seated position while at the pro-shop. One this for sure, when seated, the draw weight feels a lot heavier!

I practice from a standing position and always try to shoot while standing. Like Rob, I immediately stand when I see a deer that might become a target.

I always try to shoot with seated if possible. I can limit my movement and remain somewhat secluded. I use ladder stands alot so it is easier. to shoot while seated.

I stand...if its a morning hunt i take a seat and am able to get up without a problem...on an evening hunt, i will sit until the last hour of light, then stand the rest of the time.

I stand.

I'm forced to stand in my climber because it has a rail. In a lock-on, I would take a seated shot if I had to.But, I stand up as soon as I see a deerif I won't be detected. I'm like at least one other person in this thread, I stand up during the first and last 45 minutes of daylight for sure.

I stand in a deer stand. I don't like sitting at all.
When I get up in the tree I turn the seat of my climber off to the side and put my pack and stuff on it. :)

I hold onto my bow the whole time too. However, in my old age, a bowhanger/holder is starting to look more appealing. (my poor little hands get cold) ;)

I shoot a 58" recurve , so seated shots aren't practical with my climber due to a front bar . I aspire to a Summit Open Shot or Bullet Backpacker next year .

I also prefer to take the shot standing!! Although if I absolutely have to I can take a shot setting!

I like to be standing if at all possible. I try to spend at least half my time in a tree standing anyway. When I was younger I hardly ever sat. Besides that the early stands didn't have seats.[&:] I start planning getting to myfeet the minute I see a deer. They can change directions in a heart beat. You can swing a lot better and use better form if you're up. It's a lot easier to change position if you're up to begin with. I have shot several while seated, more out of necessity than desire.

I always shoot standing. You can turn without as much movement. I stand the first and last hour and sit when I need to after that. I stand up whena deer is approaching my stand.

Prefer standing if I have the time, Recommend a climber without a rail so you can shoot while sitting also.

I will shoot both ways but I would guess 80% of the time I am standing.. Have been busted due to standing an the wrong time, mostly when I first started bowhunting but there are times when your better off just staying put.. Practice these shot though.

Every deer I've shot up til this year I have been standing on stand 16 years of bow hunting. This year shot my firstdeer off the ground @ 10yds and I was crouched up almost in fetal position it was a very awkward shot but it was right on the money. That said I prefer standing but I am now addicted to hunting on the ground eye level with the deer.

RE: Seated or Standing?

I have a climber with arm rests but if the deer are in front of me and not on the sides i can take the shot. I love sitting down and shooting since its one thing less i got to worry about. Then when im sitting and pulled back i put my elbow on my knee so its just like a rest. That way you dont move as much.

RE: Seated or Standing?

I have done it both ways and actually find it more comfortable to shoot sitting. However, my range of coverage is far more limited in the sitting position.

I prefer to stand: first, I need to watch 360 degrees which I find to be much easier standing. Second, I can position for a shot over about 270 degrees including some while facing the tree as opposed to at most 120 degrees while sitting. Also, it is much easier to position for a very close shot while standing.

Like others, I try to avoid the need to stand when the deer appear by spending the prime time portion of the hunt already standing.

Most of my hunting lately has been from ladder stands. I buy the cheap ($50) stands at Dick's because there is a very good chance of a more valuable stand getting stolen, but I would much prefer a more expensive model with a flip-up seat. My Lone Wolf hand climber is supposed to be suitable for flipping up the seat, but then I would have to give up the extra security of strapping the seat to the platform. A flip up seat arrangement would be a huge improvement in comfort: I could stand and lean against the tree.

I can shot both ways but I like to stand becuase i shoot 3D standing, but i like sitting when siting in a lock on becuase i feel more stable. If i am standing then i feel alittle shaky.
