Ok would you rather?
Would you rather take a questionable 50 yd shot at a buck of a lifetime and risk missing or worse wounding the deer or let him walk and pray he comes back the following day?
|
RE: Ok would you rather?
If I had any doubt in my mind thatI couldn't make a clean, ethical shot, there is no way that arrow would leave my string.

I'm shootin! Why you ask? Because I can. [&:][8D][&:][8D]

RE: Ok would you rather?
I'd definitely pass. Heck, I had a great buck at 20 yards 2 years ago with me at full draw aiming at him. I had to pass up the shot because the angle was wrong. He was quartering sharply toward me and I won't take a low-percentage shot. I love to hunt, but I want my kills to be quick and humane.

RE: Ok would you rather?
For me there is no such thing as a questionable 50 yd shot at a deer. At 50 yds, no shot exists, whether it be questionable, good, bad, marginal.
|
RE: Ok would you rather?
I'd shoot him at 40 but not 50
|
RE: Ok would you rather?
No to 50 yds. I'd have to think about 40 yds. 30 or less, no brainer. Just because you can hit a Ø3" circle on a 18" X 18" foam block at 50 yds in your back yard doesn't mean the same applies to any deer (monster buck or not). "String jump" doesn't apply to afoam block (it'll take twice as long or more for your arrow to go 50 yds vs 25 yds, not done the math, just a logical assumtion), plus your heart rate and breathing is not quite as intense when the quarry in made of foam. Thats my opinion, to each his own.

RE: Ok would you rather?
I would wait for sure. Unless, I am sure I can make the kill, I would wait, I would just chalk it up to it not being the right time.
|
RE: Ok would you rather?
Dont take the shot! An idiot will get lucky every now and then,But gut shoot that buck and spend hours looking for his rotten body 3 days later.Thats one of the diferances between luck and skill.

RE: Ok would you rather?
No shot.

RE: Ok would you rather?
I passed up a perfect broadside shot on a black bear at a distance of 35-40 yards. I just didn't have enough broadheads downrange at that distance to feel confident in a perfect shot. Sometimes I kick myself for not taking it, but if I had killed it what would I ever do with it?
I did learn something fromt encounter though and that is to practice just a bit more past 30 yards. The problem is that I hate destroying broadheads and arrows. A miss can cost upwards of $10 a pop. |

RE: Ok would you rather?
I wouldn't take a questionable shot period.
|
RE: Ok would you rather?
A 50 yard shot would either be on or not. Most likely under shoot the deer. The deer would not be spooked at that range and the shooter if they keep their wits about them would get a second shot. Each shot opportunity is different and I couldn't say one way or another until it happens. I would take the info and use it later. I don't often have 50 yrds to shoot something at. Too much stuff in the way. A lot of guys out west take these and longer shots.

RE: Ok would you rather?
If it is questionable at 50yds it is not a shot as far as I'm concerned. As far as the buck of a lifetime goes let me ask you this. Do your skills get better because it is the buck of a lifetime or do your ethics get worse?
|
RE: Ok would you rather?
If I am not 100% confident in my mind. Then No Shot, as our sport is more about mental that physical, and if you are not sure mentally, you are more than likely not going to be as accurate.
Why does it always have to be a buck? |
RE: Ok would you rather?
Let him go to far a shot wait till tomorrow
|
RE: Ok would you rather?
I would have to pass since I am not good enough of a shot yet to take it. Newb here.
|
RE: Ok would you rather?
To quote you, you said "questionable shot".
Nobody should every take a "questionable shot" regardless of the distance. If the shot is questionable than there is NO SHOT. And the size of the deer is totally irrelavant. Is it okay to risk wounding a deer just because his antlers are bigger than usual? This logic is absurd. The decision to shoot should be based on your ability to execute the shot beyond any doubt. The size of the rack does not change your ability to make the shot.Wounding asmall deer is just as bad as wounding a big one. |
RE: Ok would you rather?
And that is really all there is to say!
