Come on ladies and gents need some advice.

OK ladies and gentlemen, I've been looking at the previous "what type of broadhead do you think I should get?" threads. I had some trouble with the Spitfire 100 grain's this year. A friend suggested Imight want think about goinga fixed blade broadhead nextseason,as they have less of a chance of malfunction. For the record, I have taken a nice nine pointer this year with the Spitfire, but, I had two of themnot extend fully on impactpriorto which resulted in under penetration andtwo long tracks in which I could have gone empty handed if I had given up after searching forroughly9 long hours on one track and the following morningon the other.

From what I haveread, it seems as if themajority is split between SlickTricks and Montecs. One of my comrades swears by Montecs, but, he has not taken a deer yet this year, however, it is notfrom alack of hunting. Just haven't eyewitnessed the damage or lack there offrom one of his Montecs. I'd really appreciate some opnions from the seasoned hunters who have used either or and, if possible, some reasons why.

Also if it matters, I am planning on switching from an aluminum arrow to the carbon arrow next season if that makes a difference in broadhead selection. Just trying to get ahead of the game for next season seeing how the sales on archery equipmentare abundant this time of year. I apologize for the long-windedness........I just like to give the details up front.

Thanks,
VA

RE: Need some opinons on broadheads.

I'll try to do this without blasting a brand !:) I don't like expandable thats me ! i know lots of people that are very happy with them ! yeh for them ! montecs are trash out of the box until you sharpen them . I got them i know. muzzy I use them now they also sometimes get dull but will blast through a deer with a little sharpening. slick trick they had issues last year but now their really sweet i hear ! sharp out of the box . I will be shooting slick tricks next year for sure !montecs i read make a whisle sound when going through the air . I never shot them enough to notice. I will never hunt with aluminum arrows again ! why would you change IMO your taking a leap backwards.

If you are changing to carbon just be aware that you get the spine correct, meaning stiff enough. If you err keep it on the stiff side. It's not a hard choice really. Carbons are usually adaptable over a larger weight range than aluminums. Whereas you might need to change arrows for a 5# change in bow weight with aluminum the carbons often cover 15-20 range. Whatever you choose be sure to check the manufacturer's spine charts.

There are different grades and straightness factors, too. You just have to decide how much money you want to spend. For instance, with Gold Tip there are arrows that are straight to about .006". The there are some that are .003". Then there's top of the line that go .001". They are all basically the same shaft sorted by tolerance and priced accordingly from about $60 to $100 per dozen. Go middle of the road for a good compromise.

Other manufacturers are much the same.

As for broadheads, I don't jump on the bandwagon every year like a lot of folks. I have what works well for me and stay with them for years. I've been using InnerLoc for several years now. A similar built head is the Muzzy. This year I took a look at some new ones and one I like is the Slick Tricks. I pay particular attention to how the blades are locked into the ferrule. The stronger the better.

A relatively new craze, and a good one, is the short stubby heads with stainless steel ferrules vs aluminum. With less blade surface there's bound to be less wind planing and a stronger ferrule. Just another issue to look at.

It's a long time till next season so you should have plenty of time to do homework. And most assuredly someone will come out with something "the latest and greatest" and everyone will be touting it.

Good luck.

Check out the G5 Strikers. They are a replacable blade broadhead and are very sharp out of the box. Made by the same manufacturer that makes Montec. I shot the Montecs and will contiue to do so with the Mathews until they are all ruined. They are a solid broadhead but they aren't super sharp out of the box.

But they are very easy (perhaps the easiest head) to put an extremely sharp edge on.

I took a cow elk with the slick trick in september. It was my practice head instead of the brand new (sharp) ones. :D I will be using the ST for elk from now on. Before that, I've used the 3 blade Muzzy and my own that I fabricated with great success.
