Which bow, lol Need help from Ya'll.

Hey ya'll. Here's the sticky. My mom's husband (stepfather)(Tim) wants to buy his one son (Tom) a bow for Christmas. His son is in his early 30's and has never bowhunted. Tim called me and has no idea what to get him. He wants to order it from Cabelas so I am going through the catalog now and there's some decent bows there for a beginner. I was given a budget to adhere to. That budget is $300 so I'm looking at the packages. These are the ones I'm looking at and want to know your opinions as well. Remember, I have pretty much a full pro shop in my basement and will be setting them up myself and feel I shouldn't have any problem getting any of them to shoot perfectly. The need to send him into a pro shop is not a concern.

Okay, here's the list in no particular oder.

Parker Buckshot Outfitter package.
6" Brace
32" ATA

Reflex Excursion
8.5 brace
34.5" ATA
IBO 295

Fred Bear Odyssey
5.25" Brace
31 ata

PSE Nova
7" brace
39 ata
293 fps

That's about all of them in the right price range. They all have WB on them, first thing I will change but with a rookie perhaps I should let it on...not a fan of the WB.

The forgiving brace height of the Reflex would be best for a beginner I think. Reflex is good stuff so quality is not a worry.

Tx took the words right out of my mouth.

I'd go with the more forgiving brace height of the Reflex to start him out on.

Rob I got this one for my youth hunter, the kid could not shoot the damn thing!

We exchanged it for Reflex Excursion and the kid is drilling them now!!

I'd go with the Reflex as well.
A forgiving brace height is a big plus for a new archer i think

PS
I use a WB but would probably not reccomend one for a beginner.
Your form has to be pretty good for a WB to work well.

i was just looking at them and i would say if he can swing 20 more bucks i would go with the reflex buckskin i think that is what i twas called very nice bow

I gotta agree with WH and TX. Reflex.

Higher Brace height,a touchlonger ATA (by today's standards of 31-33")

Should be a good solid shooter and make a great treestand bow.

Plus, Reflex is a solid company.

Ya'll are saying what I was thinking as well.

Reflex for the brace height and the fact that its a darn good bow (Hoyt).

Reflex - Highlander a bit less brace eight than the Excursion, but shots very well. I just got one the beginning ofsummer and was shooting tight and consistant groups. Only $40 buckmore and has wide range of LBs and draw lengths...

I agree with the ATA and brace height (for the Relfex) it will be a more forgiving bow for a beginner. I used to shoot a Reflex buckskin and it used to creep on me though, that's when i switched to the bowtech. Other than that it is a good bow, and definitely worth the money.

Excursion Rob. Great minds must think alike huh;). I actually recomended this bow to a few people who were looking to start in to archery and they have been very pleased with their purchase.

yea the reflex is a good one to go with, I'm just partial to PSE novas, I had one that served me quite well for years. either of those 2 would get the job done.

You just can't beat Reflex for the price and quality.

Rob:

questions....

1) What's his draw length?
2) does it have to be a new bow?
3) Would you be interested in a 1 yr old Browning Illusion if the answers to No. 1 and No. 2 were right (It's already got a WB on it)? I've been thinking I might sell Mitch's bow and set the Switchback up to 60lbs and let him shoot it. I could always have it worked on, quickly, if I needed it as a backup.

Just thinking.....

After our conversation, Rob.....

Illusion can be adjusted from 25" to 29". It has Winner's choice strings and cables.....and a WB already on it (I have a spare one I can put on the SB for Mitch). Only need sight/stabilizer and a peep adjustment. I also have the original strings and cables that came on it....still in the package. Your call.

I changed my mind, quit being a tight a$$ and buy the kid a Bowtech Alligence[8D]

RE: Which bow, lol Need help from Ya'll.

i have the pse nova, and its definitley the bow to get if your just starting out, or are a kid, it has insane adjustments, and i can group 4 arrows withing 5 inches of each other from 50 yards with a WB on. Its a bit noisy, but sims products fix it up. i highly recommend it for just starting out, you cant go wrong for the price!

EDIT: plus my uncle has a matthews switch back, and i can group better than him with it, and that makes him really mad because he payed about 300 more bucks than me, and has been hunting for 20 more years than me, and i dont even have the best shot in the world.

also its on sale at cabelas right now for only $229!

RE: Which bow, lol Need help from Ya'll.

Rob.

For a beginner I would have to suggest either the Reflex or the Nova, with the Nova probably being the better choice because of the brace and the longer ATA specially for a beginner he will be able to hold it a little more steadyier than a short ATA bow.

Just my thoughts of course;)

mobow 12-04-2006 02:56 PM

RE: Which bow, lol Need help from Ya'll.

I voted the Excursion, for a few reasons. It's got a good mix of a generous brace height, good ATA and good speed. Yeah, the Nova has a longer ATA, but unless he's gonna shoot fingers, it's almost too long, IMO...and slower. I will admit I don't have any experience w/ the Nova, but I do w/ the Excursion. Man alive, is that an awesome bow, especially for the money.

I am not a fan of Parker. We USED to see them at our shop, but we had so many problems w/ the bows themselves and the customer service that we said screw it. And Bear....well....I just don't really have anything good to say about them either. We see quite a few of those at the shop as well, and they are not only a PITA to work on, but they are made.....well.......cheap. Just my .02.

I'd go with the Reflex as well. A buddy of mine who is a very experienced shooter/bowhunter bought a new lesser priced Reflex(forgot the model) just to hunt with. He loves it!

Rob im leaning toward the reflex to, i know some people who have one and have nothing bad to say about it. My son used to have a pse nova-ac that had the arson cam and it was a great bow. He would still have it but it got torched in a home fire.

Get that new Bowtech Rob and you can easily exceed that number. But I tell ya, that puppy is interesting. It's suppose to be a shooter. Len is going to try it first so I don't have to spend the money just yet. His should be in soon.
